[RELEASE] 8tracks - Listen to handcrafted internet radio - t0mm0 - 2011-05-22

hi!

here is a plugin to let you listen to streaming music from 8tracks.com

it's not finished (once i got the basics working i couldn't get any work done as i was too busy listening to all the cool music Wink) but it works pretty nicely already so have a play and see what you think...

current features(v0.2.0):
  • browse mixes by newest, hot this week, popular this month
  • browse mixes by tag
  • Manually enter a tag to browse
  • search for mixes by artist
  • continuous play - music will keep playing forever (when the end of a mix is reached, another chosen by the mix author will start or if they haven't chosen one the site will try and find a similar mix)
  • skip songs with your 'skip' button

todo:
  • add features that require login (mix feed, like, follow etc.)
  • find a good way of displaying mix descriptions (any ideas?)
  • xbox version and dharma doesn't update title/artist in osd (but songs are shown in the 'now playing' list) - maybe there is some way round this? fixed in 0.2.0!

just realised that eden-pre is the only version that shows the correct track names in the OSD.

i'll see if i can think of a better way of doing the continuous play stuff.

anyone have any ideas?

Cant get it to work unfortunately, heres my debug log:

for some reason your xbmc seems unable to play that file (ie. it's an xbmc problem not a plugin problem). looks like a fairly old version - maybe an update would help?

for info, this is not a debug log - please enable debugging when submitting logs as it gives more info to work with.

Hehe, I thought the "debug" log was a bit short. Almost like I could understand some of it myselfWink

My build is a bit old yes, it´s an PVR build that is working really good for my needs but i guess it´s time to update. Thanks for your help.

Any plans to add more search functions to the plugin? It would be great if you could search for tags, rather then sorting through hundreds of them. Or can you search for tags under "search artists"?

there doesn't appear to be a way to search for tags using the site, even the list of tags was done by scraping as there is no api call.

i labelled the search as search artists as that is what it is called on the site, but from testing it looks like it does actually search through at least artists, mix title, mix info and tags.

i could add an option to type in a tag name rather than having to find it in the huge list - would that be useful? or if you've spotted a way to search for tags on the site that i have missed please let me know.

ps. i think i've found a way around the dharma/xbox versions not displaying the song info in the osd and as usual i think it is down to my stupidity Wink will try and release an updated version in the next week or so.

I actually never heard of the website until I found your plugin Smile Now that I've looked at it, I also can't figure out a way to search for tags directly. but an option to type in a tag name rather than searching through the entire list would be great!

this adds option to manually enter a tag, and fixes song info display in dharma and xbox versions.
