Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - ck2012 - 2012-10-30

Hello all

I am experiencing a slow choppy fast forward when i get to x8. This is off a NFS file server and is a iso file. I have added a buffer increase of 500mb in advanced settings. I even tried a value of 0 for unlimited.

I have 8 gigs of ram on a intel g620. Is this a common problem?

Thanks

I think that's par for the course when fast-forwarding a playing file over your network and changing the buffer size won't have any impact. You can confirm whether or not the network is the bottleneck by copy a video file over to your local disk and playing it there with 8x fast-forward.

I do have a few media streamers in the house. They do not seem to have this problem and they go to x64 speed. That is why i did not think it was the network more of how the software is handling the stream.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

When going ff the decoder still has to decode every frame. Most likely it has not the power to do X8, hence it gets late. If the delay between clock and decoded frame hits a threshold, player does a seek.
I guess the file pointer can't easily be re-positioned on a iso file.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - ck2012 - 2012-10-31

so you think its a processor power issue? I would think 8 gigs of ram is enough.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - Ned Scott - 2012-11-01

You can have a lot of ram and still have weak processing power.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - ck2012 - 2012-11-01

ok so we think it is a processor. well i do have an i3 2100 i could try.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - FernetMenta - 2012-11-01

You can't expect that a box can go 8 times faster than normal. Many struggle with X1. The bottle neck is seeking in the iso which is located remote.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - ck2012 - 2012-11-01

So if its not a network and not a CPU/RAM issue, is it just that the software is not optimized for FF iso? I know that my media streamer has no issues and is half of the machine that my htpc.

Rewind and fast forward worked very well with Gotham 13.2 - smooth and at the stated X speeds - but after the upgrade to Kodi, they have become jerky and stutter. Rewind almost stalls. 32x rewind or fast forward seems even slower than 2x. I'm kinda surprised because Kodi is supposed to have improved fast forward and rewind.

Anyone else with this problem?

I help run a small network in a library with different machines from single to quad core, mostly single, Intel and AMD cpu's with 1 to 4 Gb of ram. The hardware or display makes no difference. All of them are running Xubuntu 14.04 or 14.10. All of them have the same problem with Kodi. It makes no difference too whether the videos are in the clients locally or in our NAS server.

So, I have switched back to Gotham 13.2 and the rewind and fast forward run smoothly and respond quickly to mouse clicks.

Will try Kodi 14.1 later and see if this problem goes away. In the meantime, very happy with Gotham 13.2.

I'm having the same issue. Since updating to 14.1 the fast forwarding and rewind is very slow... seems like even 32x isnt faster than, say, 4x or 8x. Hopefully there will be a fix with the new release. Can't really find anything about it anywhere to attempt a fix.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - Orionds - 2015-03-23

Yes, I couldn't find any solutions posted online either. 13.2 is smooth and fast during rewind and fast forward, even on single-core PCs. It's pretty astounding.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - russco - 2015-05-09

Totally agree. I've held off on updating to Kodi specifically because of fastforward and rewing issues.

RE: Buffering and Slow Fast Forward - FernetMenta - 2015-05-09

what version did you try last? I have been working on this and it shows quite some improvements. Just submitted another fix which will be included in the nightly available tomorrow

Same issue for me using Helix 14.2. I had to go back to Gotham because of the frustration.
