Scrapers (except the offline metadata) are not working at the moment in AEL 0.9.7 so it's a good idea to disable them in the addon settings for the scanner. Anyway, the crash you are getting should not happen (it's a bug). In AEL settings, ROM scraping tab, set "Metadata scraper" and "MAME metadata scraper" to "Offline scraper".
Many thanks for your reply and help. I'm using AEL 0.9.8 - I realised yesterday that I haven't updated to Leia 18.2 (still on 18.1) is it worth doing that to see if that makes a difference?
Full debug log here onozajiqew.kodi (paste) - I assume it's the same Kodi log file just with debug turned on in AEL and not in Kodi, rather than a separate log file.
Both of those scrapers were already set to "offline scraper"

OK. Please install AEL from this commit. Recently I did some work on AEL trying to revive the scrapers with some code from master branch made by Chrisism, however it is still far from finished. Next couple of weeks I will be on holidays so expect no support. The commit I gave you is the current most stable version of AEL.

You beat me to it - I re-read the first page and noticed that 0.9.8 was a development build, don't know why I installed that, I think I was following the instructions on github. Anyway, I updated to 18.2 and installed 0.9.7 and it has scanned in roms perfectly for Atari and PS1 - the latter play fine, but I can;t get the Atari games to run, but I'm sure I'll figure that out.

OK, cool it works now. If you wish, the version I pointed out is as stable as 0.9.7 with a few improvements like artwork for the virtual launchers and display of categories/launchers in flat mode.

everytime im back on the home window that favorite is empty window pops up... cant find where to turn it off.. i dont care that the favorite folder is empty.

Do you have the favorites category as a widget in your home menu maybe? So each time your homescreen loads it tries to load the favorites, which are empty as indicated.
Post your logs to have a better look into it.

@rdyott AEL and AML include special URLs for the skin to obtain lists for the widgets. The difference between the normal version and the skin version is that the normal version may produce warnings/dialogs but the skin versions are silent. As Chrisism said, you get the notification because the Favourites are empty. Ruffo is using the standard URLs because the skin versions are not documented yet. Please be patient, we will fix this issue.

(and a LNK is the shortcut to the actual windows game, shortcuts have the .lnk extension. So copy/move the desired desktop shortcuts into a folder)

Have a look at the Firefox command line parameters. I recommend you create a LNK file to make your tests (you can change the launch arguments of the LNK file and try) and once you have what you want create a Standalone Launcher in AEL copying the arguments of the LNK file.
