It is great to hear these accounts of how people use kodi - it gives me a good picture of what people actually use versus simply stuffing info on screen because it is available.
Building on the suggestion from @meridius - I think a few select codec flags can look nice:
I'll need to rethink a few things in the info screen with the hint labels, but I think it works pretty well.

I don't understand this obsession with codecs. I understand things like Atmos, HDR and 3d because those have external hardware requirements, but aside from those, what purpose does having all the codec info on screen serve in terms of choosing a movie to watch?
Codec info is unnecessary clutter which goes against the minimalism I'm trying to emphasise here. I'm willing to have things on screen if there is a functional need, but I'm not adding info just because it exists.
Actually it does matter. So my movies are set on automated downloads and sometimes things go wrong and for example I will aquire a movie with a dolby digital soundtrack. Which means I will not be watching it until a better version is avaliable therefore I will wait until its released. That's the same for rips. With some movies I will wait until they redownload in blubray rip for example instead of webdl. I user sonarr and radarr for downloads and despite them being quite good with getting the right version sometimes mistakes do happen. That's why I'm always looking at the soundtrack and quality. I don't care about codex but those two l things actually matter to me.

It's not that it's difficult to add a setting, the issues are that:
1. It changes the design of the skin, so there is a ripple on effect into other elements which will also need to change to accommodate where the codecs go. For instance, I now need to change the hint text in the info dialog because it can't use that position on screen anymore. The now playing music info also needs to change location from initial spot in the bottom right.
2. Having a large number of settings is confusing to users and I end up having to do a lot of hand-holding in terms of telling users where to find settings. This sort of thing wastes a lot of my time which I could instead spend skinning.
3. More settings increases the amount of time I need to spend testing (because I need to test all combos of settings).
4. It makes the code more complex and thus increases the potential for bugs.
5. I have no interest in making a "kitchen sink" skin. The skin should work "out of the box" without needing lots of setup other than customising your home menus.

Yeah definitely will - though it wont be until I have everything else done first. My order is basically:
Library/Home/Info > ExtendedInfo > Settings/Dialogs > OSD > PVR > Addons (i.e. Global Search, Next Up, Up Next).
Haven't even got to the OSD yet!

@jurialmunkey thanks for the kind word about the logos, I tried a couple of things like making the logos the same colour as the movie title. did you try it did it not look right is this why you picked a lighter colour ? and perhaps the audio channels ?. Also how's about adding the res logos, I know you wanted it simple so I had a idea of adding logos to show the res.
eg,
SD under 720p
HD as you have it now for 720p
FHD for full hd 1080p
4K for ultra hd videos

so something like this with the different res flag showing as 4k and two different ideas of the audio channels
or a image of the channels instead of just text ? I do like this one as the channels (5.1) are the same size text as the other logos to the left of it but you have a overhang of the audio box that is in line but also bigger and drops below the other logos, That seems to make it look better as its at the end of all the logos to the left and looks like it finishes it off if you know what I mean. just thought
