Asus/HP/Acer/Dell ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC/Linux+Kodi) [v3.5 - 2014/12/22] - Arse4life - 2014-12-22

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded the wifi card in this box, or is it impossible?

of course it's possible to replace, you were staring right at it when you took out the write-protect screw. A better question is what are you hoping to achieve by upgrading? The box itself doesn't have multiple antenna, and the stock module is already dual band A-C I believe

Never hurts to ask when in doubt. :-) Thanks for clarifying that for me, Matt.

I have a Logitech keyboard and mouse that I am having major issues with. I have no problem with the keyboard as far as selecting Ctrl D or Ctrl L but once I am booted into ChromeOS or Ubuntu the mouse and keyboard become completely unresponsive. The keyboard will work sometimes in Ubuntu but the mouse is unusable. This same mouse and keyboard work fine on my Home Theater Computer in the same room in both Windows and Ubuntu.

Is it worth me buying another Mouse and Keyboard and trying it or could it be an issue with the Chromebox. I do not own a wired mouse or keyboard to try (Can you even buy them anymore?).

Any troubleshooting tips?

Quote:that's certainly not an issue I've seen before - what model keyboard/mouse? do they use a unifying receiver?

Thanks for the reply. I figured it out. It was my own stupidity. Number one I didn't notice there were usb ports on the front of the box. I had it plugged in the back and I think it was getting interference. I moved the receiver to one of the front plugs put fresh batteries in the mouse and all seems good in the world.

According to Asus' site, the stock wifi module supports a/b/g/n on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. It does not support AC. Whether that actually matters for streaming media is another question entirely. (Answer: The extra bandwidth doesn't matter, but the extra range from beamforming might.)

must have been thinking of the Dell, which uses an Intel A-C module

That's what I thought I read myself.

I'd like to take out the wifi (which I don't use) and replace it with something useful. However, this useful thing alludes me. I thought maybe Broadcom chip, but I assume that is weaker than the Intel HD Graphics, if not and there would be some benefit I would be all over that.

Hi Matt,

If Openelec was corrupted due to editing of files during SSH and cannot boot up now, but I can still Ctrl-D into Chrome OS, what is the correct way to restore the Openelec installation? Openelec was my default OS.

Should I run the EZ-script (once or twice?) again?

New stuff for me: Synology DS213j, WD Red 3TB's, Asus Chromebox M004U. All hardwired.

Goal to store and stream photos and videos to TV via Chromebox. Music and DVR via OTA comes later.

Completed: Device Prep, OpenELEC, Kodi install.

Issue 1: When trying to add files / folders to Kodi, all it sees on the DS213j are the "photos", "videos", and "music" folders, not the ones I created. How can I get it so see these? I selected UPnP Devices in the browse for new share menu. Is this right? Or am I not able to make my own folders? THe Samsung DLNA smart TV didn't see my folders either. Can I have spaces in my folder names?

Issue 2: Using UPnP method above (to get to a few test files in the "photo" folder), it won't play (or even see) my movie files. Filetypes are mts and mov. It was able to see the picture filenames, but didn't pull them up. jpegs.

solution: mount the folders as windows network shares, not UPNP folders.
eg, for each section: Add Files-->Windows Network-->WORKGROUP-->Diskstation-->[folder name you created]

Quote:Issue 3: Logitech K400r wireless keyboard didn't seem to allow me to press ctrl L to boot to openelec. I had a hardwired USB one that did. Can you recommend a low cost keyboard that may work?

K400 is listed on wiki as non-working for dev boot screen; K360 is cheap and works well.

Quote:Issue 4: Upon boot up, I don't get the developer screen on the TV (via HDMI). Just the default screen for no picture. Not sure if this is significant, as long as I remember to hit crtl-L quickly...

Thanks in advance, hope I can get this going, as the interface looks nice for sure.

either your TV doesn't support 1024x768 as an input resolution, or can't sync quickly enough (depending on the delay you have set). No real way to mitigate this in a ChromeOS/dual boot setup as it's hardcoded in the stock firmware

More on issue 2;
Any other ideas: I deleted the "Disktation" folders cerated via UPnP, then tried as you indicated above. I get a "Operation not permitted" error every time.

More on Issue 3:
Correct, I was in the wiki after I had it at home. I'll keep looking, I like the keyboard and touchpad in one unit.

Issue 4 / general info:
It seem if I don't time the CRTL-L correctly, it freezes with a Boot error of " Booting from hard disk... It appears your computer has only 693K of low DOS RAM. This version of Syslinux needs 9k to boot. If you get thi message in error, hold down Ctrl key while booting and I will take your word for it:.

Not sure if this is relevant to anything but wanted to mention... I picked 5GB on the 0-10 selection option for memory of some sort during setup.

Thanks again for help.

If you're referring to the Broadcom CrystalHD (used in the ATV1), then the onboard Intel HD4000 is far superior.

no, we'll edit the file from ChromeOS, just msg me on IRC later on. Unless you don't care about your settings, then you can just re-run the OpenELEC install from the script (once). Then msg me on IRC to figure out your AVR issue.

make sure the shares you created on the diskstation have CIFS enabled, and that guest user has R/W access to each. I'm using a DS415+ here with DS 5.1, so I know it works Smile

ok, since you have DS as well, any tips on where to find the CIFS bit? I've looked around at most menus and the only spot I found it was in "directory service --> control panel --> LDAP" I don't know what LDAP is and assume it it not set up, nor do I have a name for it.

I do have R/W granted on editing the settings for the shared folder. Still looking for more and CIFS.

The following are checked yes for access: Enable Windows File Service, Enable SMB, Enable NFS, Enable NFSv4. Still getting "Operation not permitted error"

This was all done prior to asking for help again. Tried again for fun, with same result. Other ideas?

For clarification, I'm trying to add under pictures and videos, then add pictures, "browse for source", select "windows network (SMB)", select Workgroup, select diskstation --> this is where the error pops up.
