I think I'm being thick. Ubuntu 14.04, Kodi 17, Bluez v5, Usb bluetooth controller and an 8bitDo controller. Works in retroArch, auto connects/pairs on boot. Snes Controller Addon installed and enabled (also default controller installed and enabled). The problem is that Peripherals is greyed out and so is Configure Attached Controllers. Docs describe a 'Peripherals' category, but I have 'Game Addons'. I saw an extra joystick addon mentioned above - but I'm a little unsure of what I should do. Any tips?

The SNES controller add-on is just a profile that emulators can use. The idea is that if you install an emulator, it automatically installs the required controller profile(s).
The problem lies in the "Joystick support" add-on. You can find this in the add-on manager under My Add-ons / Peripheral Libraries / Joystick Support. Is this present and enabled? If so, and it still doesn't work, can you post a debug log?

I don't have a category called Peripheral Libraries at all. Not under My Addons or under the Kodi Repo. I upgraded from Kodi 16 stable to 17.0Beta3 using apt-get. edit: updated to nightly beta4, still no peripheral. Trying to compile with cmake, but I'm on thin ice here. Also, I'm using the unstable versions of libretro and retroarch already, in case that is relevant.

I've asked the dev that manages the PPA to add the joystick support add-on. When it's in the PPA, you can install it via apt-get install kodi-peripheral-joystick or something similar. I'll post back here when it's up.

Yah joystick support would be great.. I have Kodi setup in a arcade cabinet but can't get joystick to work well. Double tap entries when trying to move left and right just doesn't work well ..

@drewjbx you can install the joystick support add-on from source, see the (slightly outdated) instructions at https://github.com/xbmc/peripheral.joystick . Whether you go that route or install via apt-get when it's uploaded, let me know if there's any problems with the arcade controls.
