Entering numbers is already used for jumping directly to a channel, there's no point in making that anymore complicated. I propose that RW/FF jumps 12 hours in time and Prev/Next (the <| and |> keys) jump 24 hours.

I would ask that we stay away from using the Prev/Next keys, as many of us who watch Live TV like to remap those to skip forward 30 seconds and skipback 7 seconds. So, I would propose that RW/FF be 24 and Prev/Next be 12, and again suggest that these defaults be changeable in advancedsettings.xml.

Why would you want to skip forward 30 seconds while the screen is covered by the EPG timeline? What I'm saying is that the keys can be reused in different contexts.

I'm not using PVR yet but will do soon, so don't shoot me if what I ask is already there...
I'd like this:
- Left, right = scroll through EPG (horizontal for the overview (like the screenshot below) or vertical when you are looking at the schedule for a specific channel)
- >> = skip a day (<< go back one day) (while sticking to the same hour)
- >>| = skip a week (|<< go back one week) (while sticking to the same hour)
In addition a day selector would be great. In the below screenshot for example the "DO 4 APR" shows that you're watching the schedule for Thursday 4th of April and if you'd select "DO 4 APR" you could select another day from a calendar picker. In addition it indicates with << and >> that you can use those buttons to skip and go back one day in the timeline.

Many people don't have a weeks worth of EPG data so having a button jump that much seems a bit overkill. I like the 12/24 hour approach more personally.

i think if you start keying in a number on the EPG, the only way to action it should be to wait for the timeout (incase you are entering more digits) or press Enter/OK to action it straight away. Pressing up/down/left/right should cancel the number entry and simply move up/down/left/right in the EPG grid as it usually does. And jumping forward/back by 12/24 hours with the transport keys (ff/rw/next/prev) is good enough. We dont need arrow keys doing special things when numbers have been entered...

It is time to end the discussion. we don't add the requested feature "entering a number to jump hours".
we'll definitely add the skip -/+12/24 stuff, because i'm already working on it and it's easy to add.

You've misunderstood. I remap those keys on my remote. They don't exist on my remote anymore. Thus, putting that functionality on them would be useless to me.

I disagree. If you punch numbers and want to back out, exit should do the job.
We already have left/right doing special things if you punch in numbers while watching a video. Why not in the EPG?

Sorry, I saw this after I replied to the other messages. Understood.
Again, if possible, please allow us to change the the numbers (12 hours and 24 hours) in advancedsettings.xml. I assume that I'll be able to remap the functionality of the buttons in remote.xml. This is important to many LiveTV watchers as we don't use the playlist skip keys at all, and often remove them from our remotes in favor of other buttons.
Correction: I actually figured out how to remap them in remote.xml so that in fullscreenvideo, they do skip forward 30 and skipback 7. So, as long as there's a new entry on remote.xml covering behavior in the EPG, that should not present a problem.

A simple solution but I don't know if xbmc support long key presses is when you want a jump you long press ff or rw keys in remote and a pop up asks where to go, you simply type the minute and you go. It's one of the best features in enigma2 receivers many years now.

Typically, I check the guide listings once a week, on Sunday, and check for the whole week to see if any new shows are airing.
I start by looking at Monday, 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Then I do the same for Tuesday.
Then I do the same for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Having the ability to easily skip to the next day would be a huge time saver over holding the right arrow and watching the times fly by, and inevitably going too far or not enough (and often both).

On this, (without reading the rest of the thread) Sky in the UK use the coloured buttons for + and - 24h. They also show the buttons on the bottom of the screen to make it clear to everyone what they do.

It is not as easy detecting the key press time because of all these different remotes. But agree, this would introduce some nice features.

This was mainly in reply for the 'non-power users'. A toggleable option would be nice, 'switch on screen display of buttons'
