Sadly, the cheap HDMI switch I bought didn't work (for my purpose).
It was a "Portta PET0301S 3x1 HDMI Switcher with 3D Support - No power supply needed". So I don't recommend that one!
On the positive side, the FTV was able to power the HDMI switch via its HDMI output. That means it should be possible to find a switch that works without needing its own power cord.
So to recap, plugging the FTV into an HDMI input on my Denon 3311ci AV receiver (with no display attached) allows the FTV to output audio on SPDIF optical. Plugging the FTV into this cheap HDMI switch did NOT allow SPDIF audio.

I am getting the Amazon TV this Friday and a few questions:
Using the above Side App Installer, do you have to go through the process outlined at the beginning of this post, or can you just use the side load app to install XBMC on the Fire TV instead?
I also see that the app now includes root... So, can USB external hard drives be used, or must you also sideload something else?
Are Windows smb files shared on my network accessible?
With music, does anyone use the cross fading between songs and are there any visualizations available?
With video, is it still possible to change aspect ratio and if so, does it save your settings for each video as it does now? (now using Windows)

The description does not mention HDCP compliance, but who knows.

Although the reviews are a bit mixed as to whether it works, but I'm guessing it may
be attributed to variations in the product being sold by multiple sources. And, it's

Uh, just to be clear, the cheap HDMI switch I bought does in fact work as an HDMI switch. It will relay the FTV output to a display. What it doesn't work for, is to fool the Fire TV into thinking there is an HDMI display attached when, in fact there isn't, and therefore allowing the Fire TV to output audio on the SPDIF port for use as a headless music streamer. My AV receiver will do this, but it is doing something much more involved than a simple switch because it has to overlay its menus onto the output signal. I think what is needed is an HDMI device that does EDID spoofing/emulation and possibly also HDCP handshaking.

1. You need to sideload the Stickmount app to mount the external drive
2. Yes, xbmc sees the smb shares. No rooting is required for this to work.

I am very amateur when it comes to using mac terminal/ adb/side loading ..etc but this thread made it so easy
did anyone try using a USB hub connected to FTV usb to allow more than one USB device, such as an external hard drive and FAVI Entertainment SmartStick Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad Mouse, FE02RF-BL for example?

I have had two dongles connected to an unpowered hub. Both worked fine.

No, all current builds of Gotham support pass-through, and the most current Gotham build is 13.1. http://xbmc.org/download/
Not sure about MQ5, but I run Aeon Nox 4 (Gotham). It's a pretty heavy skin and runs fine.

Has amazon fixed the root exploit yet? I'm planning on factory resetting my AFTV today and do a XBMC install from complete scratch. But the AFTV checks for updates when you do a factory reset. So is it (still safe) to factory reset and start from scratch / root / and block the ota?

MQ5 is a little too heavy IMHO. its not as snappy as I'd like, but I did have it working. Installing it took a bit of luck. People report black screen or stuck installation. There's a menu off screen to navigate on setup, I got through it blind. If you do an install on another machine it might get help.
I'm using Nox, it's much snappier.

Good afternoon, I had a quick questions that would hopefully give me the answer that I was looking for. I am currently using an ATV2 with XBMC and I am thinking of gett the FTV because of it's added Amazon Prime features, and the newer hardware. How does the FTV perform compared to the ATV2? After there any features that do not work in XBMC on the FTV compared to the ATV2 (like won't play certain file types)?

As far as XBMC goes, the Fire TV smashes the ATV2. Absolutely smashes it.

Will it work just like the ATV2 does with a Logitech Harmony remote? I noticed that the wiki stated it wont play VC-1 files, is there anything else that it wont play through XBMC?
