RE: service.subtitles.subscene - sufreak - 2019-08-05

http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/jarvis/ shows Jarvis at 1.7.2, not 1.7.3.

I wasn't sure if manually installing the zip would break something in Jarvis

It might - but if it does you can uninstall and reinstall from the repo.  There's nothing lost if the repo version doesn't work anyway.

That's a definite NO! Tongue

The repo hasn't been updated in forever. Did you actually read anything in the thread? It's full of info and links. You need to download appelgran's updated file and use "Install from zip file" to update the Subscene addon. The original author has basically abandoned the addon, so appelgran rewrote how the addon works to get around Cloudflare's bot detection (which is what broke it in the first place).

Appelgran did all the work, all you had to do was read his posts!

Both tv show episode and movie subtitle search works now. The code is rewritten to search Google for subscene.com subtitle pages (since subscene.com has taken steps to prevent bot searching). The fine tuning of search result isn't there yet. That will be aim of v.1.7.4 and you are welcome to contribute.

Please test it and provide some feedback or contribute.

Working great so far , no errors.

Looking forward to 1.7.4

Hi @appelgran ! Thanks for fixing the service. Are you planning on submitting the fixed service to the official repo?

Did you try more than one movie? It's working great for me and others in the forum!

That could be it, I'm not using any VPN. Sorry! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe if we could login with this addon on subscene it would be any problem..

Meh. You don't need to log into Subscene to download subtitles when visiting the website, you shouldn't need to log in when using the API.

The original addon broke because Subscene chose to implement Cloudflare's very clumsy bot-blocking, which detects the addon as a bot. The new forked addon had to implement some very clever workarounds to actually restore download functionality. Logging into Subscene isn't possible because the addon doesn't actually use Subscene's API, it instead uses google search as a middle man to locate the subtitles.

You can blame both Subscene and Cloudflare for this. The addon isn't a bot, it shouldn't be treated like one. So instead of saying "maybe if we could login with this addon", you should probably ask "maybe if Subscene allowed the addon to actually use Subscene's API...."

I wouldn't expect them to go out of their way - visiting the site via browser generates ad revenue, using the addon doesn't.

o_O
Then why provide an API at all? The whole point of providing an API is so apps and other sites can access the data without a human needing to access the website.

I mean, that's literally the purpose of providing an API. Do you think IMDB provides then cripple's their own API to push add revenue? They don't, because that would be a shitty way to run their site. Cloudflare's shitty bot protection is what crippled Subscene's API, and it's Subscene's shitty admin that chose to implement Cloudflare's shitty bot protection. You're forgetting Hanlon's Razor - Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

It's bizarre you think it's some conspiracy to increase ad revenue. Wouldn't it be easier to simply discontinue their API?

I had priorities rather than conspiracies in mind.  Save your tinfoil.

Actually I might be missing something obvioius but I can't see an official subscene api.  Can you point to it?
