Ubuntu is stealing the media keys. It should be listed in the Linux FAQ (wiki), but you have to turn off the media key shortcuts in Ubuntu's system settings for Kodi to be able to see them.

You can use irw with non-IR devices?

No sorry I was confused. See Ned's suggestion.

I found the following reference:

Quote:Ubuntu might "steal" media keys (play, fastforward, rewind, volume, etc) before Kodi receives them. A temp work around is to un-set these keys in Ubuntu's keyboard shortcut settings.

But I don't have anything in my Preferences except Keyboard and Mouse, and those just set the auto-repeat speeds.

What version of Ubuntu are you running? I'll boot into it on my computer and see if I can find where it was. I also think there's another method to fixing this that doesn't require turning off OS-wide media keys, and I just forgot to add that to the wiki. I'll see what I can find.

I'm running Lubuntu 14.04 on an Odroid C1, using LXDE as a window manager

Get a better remote.

Well I have Harmony One programmable remote and Kodi on Xtreamer Sidewinder4 android media player and have same problem.
I get just basic commands from Xtreamer (Up, down, left, right, OK and Home), but I cant find additional commands for Kodi.
Which device should I add to my remote to get more commands? I would also like to auto hide control bar.

Just use the (Back) button on you mini keyboard, that gets rid of the on screen control menu.

I use the iOS Kodi remote with version 17. When I press pause, the OSD appears and remains until I press play. How can I make it pause clean without OSD?

Use the keymap editor here:

http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Keymap_Editor

Edit > Fullscreen video > Playback > Pause and remap it to any key you want. I use the "number 1" key myself.

Now back out and click save.

Now when you press the number 1 (or whatever key you chose) it will pause the video. Then press it a second time and the video will start playing again and this will not bring up the OSD
