RE: Asus/HP/Acer/Dell ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2015/11/10] - generalaccount - 2015-11-16

hello I went through the guide and now i have the Booting from hard drive...... on the black screen.

we had a storm and the power did cut when i was at the screen asking me to quit or reboot. when it came back on i got this. is there a way to get back to that screen or start over?

i have an Asus Chrombox. CN60 trying to do a standalone set up.

downloaded the img from open elec.

i am kind of new at this so just curious if i messed it up.

thanks in advance for your help.

i have been there. I thought maybe i didnt attach the img file correctly. now when i hit esc it lists my usb device. but my tvscreen cuts off the left side of the screen. so i cant see what option to press to select my usb.

if i hit 1. it says booting from hard drive. so its not that

1) the img file isn't attached to anything, it's written (not copied) directly to the USB using Win32DiskImager as per OpenELEC's instructions (assuming you didn't use the script to create the install media).
2) turn off overscan on your TV. google how if it's not obvious.
3) knowing that pressing '1' boots the hard disk, and the USB drive is listed after the hard disk, try pressing '2' Smile

wow the overscan helped.

just saw i can use 2. haha

ok so its no bootable device. I have your win32diskimger program you had in the wiki. maybe i am not using that correctly. does this sound like my issue?

that other site had a dmesg | tail .. not sure what that is. a command?

RE: Asus/HP/Acer/Dell ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2015/11/10] - generalaccount - 2015-11-16

i thought i had put it on the usb correctly. i guess i did not.

thanks for your patience. I am on the blue screen that looks like its from 1982 haha

Progress!!!

I haven't tested 15.10 for dual boot, but others are reporting ChrUbuntu (on which my Ubuntu dual boot is based) is broken, so not surprised. Given you have a ChromeBook (vs box) I'd recommend you use the chrx script instead as it's much more optimized for the books

I hope this hasn't been answered lately, I did do a quick search.
Matt: is there any way I can force the fan speed to less rotations on my HP chromebox. The fan is pretty annoying when Kodi is idle. I suspect because I use Artic Zephyr skin with animated backgrounds. (Although it's the same if I'm in the system info windows with only a single picture animating) I see the cpu usage is around 15-80/5-35 when idle, avg. cpu is probably around 40/20 temps are 59/58.

With (stock) Confluence it's 0-40/0-10, but the average is maybe around 15% (although it's all over the place), cpu speed is usually between 800mhz to 1240. Cpu temps are around 49-51 on both cores. With Confluence the fan stays at the lowest speed.

I'm using ubuntu kernel 4.1.x atm. with Kodibuntu. Although the idle cpu usage is just ridiculous, i don't really mind ..except that the fan gets pretty loud. I think I read it stays at the lowest speed until 67c, and stays at medium speed until 58c,so I guess I'm right at the edge:

With arctic zephyr it hovers around 65/66 for a little while before it hit's 67c. I guess I'd be ok with a threshold of 72c and a fallback threshold of 65c. Since the Chromebox feels pretty cool, so again, I wonder if there is any way to up the threshold of when the fan ramps up (and/or change the speeds)?

Actually I just bought an Asus CB to replace my HP (and give away the HP as xmas present for my folks), I hope it's as silent as you say it is, as it is the only reason I bought the AsusWink with the better cooling I'll probably stay under the thresholds.

I currently have two issues with ASUS CB and the OpenElec running 15.2 and may downgrade to previous release

1) The fan is full on for about 5 minutes after startup and it's louder than the old xbox fans (can hear it over 10ft away)
2) When go into suspend mode the unit is powering itself off after latest release so can't start from remote Sad

the firmware-specified fan speeds/temp ranges can be overridden by the OS. For ubuntu, look at thermald

what exact OpenELEC build are you running? System->OpenELEC->About

the Linux kernel bug which causes high fan speed on resume from suspend (not cold boot) is fixed in the Intel-EGL release of OpenELEC 6.0 (and will be in future OE releases), but requires the workaround listed in the wiki for the standard OE 6.0.0 release (and all previous betas).

ensure that you have the shutdown function set to suspend as per the wiki settings. Suspend/resume work fine here with both a MCE IR remote and PS3 BT remote, but we have no idea what you are using since you haven't told us.

I'll give that a shot next. I've always used your script and it has always worked, so I never looked for more. I installed using your script 15.04 and ubuntu boots just fine now. Terminal still doesn't work though. I've had this issue before and I can't remember how I solved it. The search key doesn't bring up the search menu, etc. Oh well.

seriously, chrx is miles better. I'll probably remove the Ubuntu dual boot feature soon and just point people to chrx

Hi Matt,

I'm using 15.2 git:02e7013

The system had auto updated so I downloaded stable build, copied to the update folder, rebooted, it then updated - powered off and shows the box in suspend (light-on) but will check tomorrow to see if still the case

also the keyboard I'm using is 'Rii i8+ 2.4GHz Mini Mobile Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad Mouse' which works fines as a remote
