RE: HOW-TO: Automated efficient (dedicated) XBMC installation on Ubuntu minimal 12.10 - Ranger620 - 2012-12-15

Great script, worked first try on Zotac Zboc HD-ID41 and I am VERY new to linux. HDMI audio is flawless except when DTS-MA is enabled I get slow stuttering video. Is there a fix for this?

My other question is how do I access the terminal to enter commands for upgrades and everything else?

Keep up the great work on this! It will be perfect once there is a stable release option.

Just download an SSH client for your operating system and connect to the IP of your XBMC box, use XBMC for user ID and enter your respective password.

As for stable release we are now on 12.0 Release Candidate 1 I have been running since Beta 1 with zero issues other than no skins available yet easily

You may want to look at the last link on my signature for clews how to setup xbmc properly (on screenshots in link)

As for accessing terminal you can do it via ctrl+alt+F1 or F2 or F3 or F4 on the box itself or use putty and ssh http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=SSH

This is sort of preliminary, I think the problem is turning on TV and then powering on machine that causes this hang after grub. I believe the LCD backlight on TV is causing some flooding of IR light, confusing the internal IR of machine and somehow affecting the boot.

The errors that popped on on screen often had lines that referred to the nuvoton CIR and never same error twice, obviously the CCFL on LCD was flooding the IR somehow.

If I have TV turned OFF (standby) and power on machine It boots clear all the time in my testing. (Turn on TV after 5 to 10 seconds of powering HTPC) I get greeted by XBMC at around ~20 seconds.

Baring in mind this is cold boots, this would also explain why when rebooting there is no problems, because TV backlight has warmed up and probably more stable IR being emitted from the TV CCFL backlight.

In the past before the internal CIR drivers went into kernel the sensibility of the HTPC internal CIR receiver was decreased and thus probably not being influenced by the LCD backlight so much.
Of course I cant test this for sure, so its only a educated guess.

So far booting with TV in standby or after TV has been on for a longer period seems not to affect the HTPC booting process.

And here I have been looking for a cause in the install all this time, though because of this I have fixed several script bugs and removed all errors from syslog and dmesg.

Are you using EXACT same hardware before/after these unexplained 'pauses' occurred or is this all new hardware never tested before, etc?

I am experiencing a similar ONLY cold boot issue as well - reboot / warm boot is 10 for 10 in consistent speed. I changed several things including replacement of a failed SATA2 HDD with and SATA3 SSD + SATA DVD drive. BIOS on mobo didn't change and is as far as it can go.

In my case, however, I am not convinced there isn't some SSD / SATA delay occurring...don't believe the OS is at all responsible ATM. I am digging into it further, but was curious to know if anything changed or was new on your HW front as well - lemme know.

Its not a slow boot, it hangs after grub on a cold boot and stays hung after two or 3 tries it boots in and takes about 20 seconds... The hang after grub happens freequently enough to make me wonder, and its not hardware failing as there's no errors to attest for that, though Im not sure where else to look.

Its a ION1 Asrock ION 330 HT, nothing different or hardware its pretty much stock (except for the fans), no SSD.

I've had a lot of troubles with my ION 330HT booting too. It stays on the bios boot screen forever... Until I remove an USB device then it instantly starts booting linux. I think there is a hardware addressing issue with this machine, or possibly temperature issues (it get pretty hot after a while). It's kind of random too, so I'm not sure what to do about it.

@Bram77

Grub is not Bios

What you describe sounds completely different You want to double check your boot devices in the bios. In fact double check your bios settings.

Im 100% sure its not USB or temperature issues (not on mine anyway), though I would increase the FAN speed in your system in Bios and definitely not have any RAM boost turned on. (that borks the boot on any Asrock)

I found out what was causing my issues as explained here 2 posts back http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=141369&pid=1268566#pid1268566 making sure TV is off until after Grub works a treat all the time. I suspect its the sensitivity on the internal CIR part of the drivers that causes this.

Hi all,

Installed this great script on:

Gigabyte E350N + cpu E350 (video onboard ati6310 hdmi port)
Kingstone 4gb ddr3
WD 500 GB sata3 16mb
Tplink usb wireless card
Logitech combo keyboard/mouse wireless
Samsung Led TV 42"
Res: 1366 x 768

Working great, ubuntu detected all my hardware without problems. Tested Avatar movie 720p and its run perfectly.

Im using default skin but how can i install Aeon? i have to place the zip file in a particular folder and then open it with the add-on zip browser or i have to use apt-get?

Sorry for my noob question im not good with linux.

Thanks in advance.

Installing skins is easy, finding the one you like is the hard part, as there's no central repository (that I know of) to browse and download skins,

I'll assume you've found a skin and have downloaded it. Go to System -> Add-ons -> Install from zip file , then navigate to your download. Assuming that's successful, then go to System -> Appearance -> Skins: Skin , select your newly installed skin.

Not all skins work with all versions of XBMC, good luck Wink

If any one does know where I can find the holy-grail skins collection/add-on, I'd love to hear about it!

RE: HOW-TO: Automated efficient (dedicated) XBMC installation on Ubuntu minimal 12.10 - n1md4 - 2012-12-20

I've just seen this skin forum topic, that will no doubt be helpful too!

RE: HOW-TO: Automated efficient (dedicated) XBMC installation on Ubuntu minimal 12.10 - un1versal - 2012-12-21

There is a central repository for skins http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Category:Skins

1 Settings
2 Add-ons
3 Get add-ons
4 XBMC.org Add-ons
5 Skin
6 Choose skin
7 Install

However bare in mind it takes time for skin authors to submit skins to xbmc.or repo and many authors never bother to submit skins because, well just because. So check if skin is compatible with XBMC version before downloading and installing via .zip method @n1md4 mentioned.

IMO 3rd party skins always tend to cause problems of some nature or another with XBMC, so personally I stick with what I know works well.

It is apparently a free world, the emphasis being on apparently. Big Grin So baring that in mind if any problems occur check the default skin has same issue before complaining about any problem in forum. :p

so I am running this how would i go about upgrading to Release Candidate 2 ?

RE: HOW-TO: Automated efficient (dedicated) XBMC installation on Ubuntu minimal 12.10 - jonhen - 2012-12-21

Installed this automated a few days ago and all working great apart from one small issue.

I'm having a small problem with iplayer. Streams play as long as iplayer is launched from the Music menu, streams will not play if iplayer is launched from the Video menu or a desktop thumbnail. Any ideas? I've been through all the settings and nothing makes any difference. Maybe it's a setting I have missed. I've included my xbmc.log for a failed launch from the thumbnail but I'm not confident it will help.

Must have messed up my .xbmc directory. Deleted it, rebooted and iplayer fine now. Blush
