Lately I seem to have a problem with the "Play from beginning" button in the info menu. When I press it, it instantly gives the error pop-up "Playback failed". The "Resume" button plays the media but doesn't actually resume from where i left off.

I also use .strm files imported into kodi libary like yourself and get no problems with resuming media or using play from beginning if the media has a resume point. It definitely seems like something isn't set up right as its getting a conflict when you use either.
