After following the preliminary steps outlined in the OP, you'll want to use the script to flash the custom coreboot firmware, then create the OpenELEC USB install media. Afterwards, reboot and install OpenELEC

Thanks matt,

Now I backup the firmware to a sd card (usb Not work) , but made the mistake of Reboot , and now can not access the menu of the script to create usb install media
When power the asus stuck on "booting from hard disk" ... I can only press " esc" if I put a Sd card but does not load the System....

How i return to the script menu ? II have to manually download the OpenELEC wich versión ?

Chromebox wiki page has links to download OE install image, link to instructions on OE website on how to create install media. Easiest way (from Windows) is to download Rufus USB tool, select downloaded OE image file (.img.gz) and just create the install media.

kodi dialogs flickering?

i recently switched from kodibuntu to galliumos.
galliumos appears more stable so far.
however all dialogs in kodi flicker badly.
pause osd and menus, movie information etc. all flicker.
main menu, views and video are fine.

i searched and this appears to be an issue that crops up from time to time.
i tried changing various system and video settings to no effect.

this is only a kodi issue everything else in gallium looks good.

this is a stand alone install to an acer cxi and i updated the firmware on 4.5.2016

is this operator error or are others seeing this issue?
i will post a log if it is needed.

any ideas?

thanks

How did you install Kodi - and what version are you running?

Most of us in these parts running Linux with Kodi are using Ubuntu/Kodibuntu, Debian or OpenElec (with a few Arch users) - not sure about GalliumOS. What distro is it based on? (Is it Debian, Arch, Fedora etc. based?)

your best bet for this is to post in the GalliumOS subreddit or ask in their IRC web chat channel; I haven't tested Kodi under GaOS extensively and don't know all the tweaks they've made under the hood.

it's a (L)Ubuntu LTS based distro that's optimized for ChromeOS hardware (Chromebooks mainly)

@matt
thank you for the reply
will do.

update:
reply to my post on the GalliumOS subreddit

"Jerem3782 - This may be an issue with the compositor compton. (I noticed flickering with other software like Chrome and Steam on Xubuntu as well.)
Try disabling it before starting Kodi and reenabling it afterwards: pkill compton and compton -b."

this solved the problem in kodi as well as improving overall screen redraw performance.
it is necessary to switch back when moving between kodi and chrome, but i can live with it. better than the flickering.

My Asus Chromebox has recently started behaving very oddly when playing videos

Purple lines flash across the screen

Green-tinged frames JUMP in and out

Sometimes it just goes black for a second or two.

All in all it's making it pretty unusable

Has anyone had similar problems? I can post a debug log later when I get home.

I have a feeling it's a hardware issue as it has worked fine for a year or more

Anyone have high cpu usage with millhouse's kodi 17 builds? Have the asus chromebox and cpu peg's to 100% after a while even after i reformatted box.

there's a good reason that the Kodi devs recommend running Kodi under Linux with a separate session that doesn't load the window manager/compositor etc and just loads Kodi directly Smile

to quote fritsch: "no debug log, no issue." The OP lists what info is needed to try and diagnose problems, and you've provided none of it unfortunately.

the best place to get support for Milhouse's Kodi 17 pre-beta builds is in the thread dedicated to them, in the Linux software support subforum; this thread is only for setup/installation issues related to the EZ Setup Script.

I have it too and, i was told it was a handshake issue same as you describe and i also posted photo. I've tried everything possible changing OS (currently running windows 10 off external HDD), downgrading coreboot firmware but nothing fixed it so yeah I guess is a hardware issue.
Though I've been able to make it behave a bit better by pushing the box against the wall with HDMI cable making some pressure in straight position, now I get occasional 2 to 6 or so seconds of "black screen" with that little change, no bad coloring behavior anymore.

RE: Asus/HP/Acer/Dell ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2016/04/10] - ilovethakush - 2016-04-15

I'm confused. A hdmi handshake issue implies that using another hdmi cable would work or at the worst it would be the tv/monitor and connecting it to another one would work.

You seem to be describing a permanent handshake issue aka a broken hdmi port, basically a broken chromebox.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

For the record, I've been using a chromebox for a long time and had no such issue, just wondering.
