RE: ChromeBox Kodi E-Z Setup Script (LibreELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2016/10/12] - kcallawa - 2017-02-03

Sorry if this has already been asked but I can't seem to find the answer by searching. I have a Asus M004U running standalone Libreelec and it's been having issues and I was wanting to update the coreboot firmware. I've downloaded GalliumOS and made a bootable USB but cannot get past the galliumOS login screen to run the EZ-Script.

what login screen? be sure to use the latest ISO (https://galliumos.org/releases/2.1/beta/galliumos-haswell-cbox-2.1beta1.iso) and write the image to USB in dd mode, not ISO mode (assuming you're using Rufus on Windows to create the USB media).

Though unless you can provide more details on the issues you're having, I'd have to wager that they aren't firmware related

Hi Matt Devo.

Do you mean download the "LibreELEC.USB-SD.Creator"?

Thank you.

yes - use the USB/CD creator to create the correct install media, then boot it and run a repair from the installer menu

RE: ChromeBox Kodi E-Z Setup Script (LibreELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2016/10/12] - bolmsted - 2017-02-06

I'm a long time user of OpenElec on ASUS Chromebox N60 (2995u) and I see recently there has been the move to LibreELEC which I take it is due to more active development and they took the developers to work on LibreELEC. I take it the Kodi development on LibreELEC is more active and you can install pre-releases like Krypton Beta that don't get released for OpenELEC for a while.

So I want to avoid bricking my Chromebox so just want to get the long and short... so I need to install Ubuntu or Gallium on a USB stick and then boot off of that and then I can upgrade from SEABIOS to this new firmware that allows me to run any OS if I want instead and then I can run the Kodi script after that. I take it I can't just boot off of an installer and do a fresh install then?

Can I backup my KODI installation first and restore that later or perhaps better to start off fresh and just keep note of my addons and settings, etc

Does LibreELEC have the same shell level customization/modification that I can do such as doing a NFS/Samba share in the shell, etc

I think I did the dual boot option of ChromeOS and OpenELEC at the time but I haven't dual booted since I installed so may as well just do standalone option.

thanks and sorry for the stupid questions but want the path to least resistance and quick installation.

Just drop the libreelec tar file into the .update directory. Same as updating oe versions.

RE: ChromeBox Kodi E-Z Setup Script (LibreELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2016/10/12] - bolmsted - 2017-02-06

thanks.

what about updating the firmware or I don't need to do this unless I want to run something besides OpenELEC or LibreELEC?

So is my analysis true that LibreELEC seems to be more bleeding edge with development than OpenELEC as far version release currency and beta updates and this project (ChromeBox) is moving in this direction too?

what I would recommend is:
  • backup existing user data (to USB) using backup utility under OE general settings
  • download GalliumOS ISO, write to USB, boot it
  • install standalone firmware update
  • create LibreELEC install media using their USB/SD creator tool
  • boot install media, install LE
  • restore backup from USB

LibreELEC is the preferred distro as OE is essentially dead IMO. The OE developers and project owner had a disagreement on the project's direction and administration, and all the devs left and formed LibreELEC. While some do still contribute to OE as well, LE is where all the work is being done, is the best supported distro. It's far more stable as well, given the amount of people working on it and their project philosophy regarding updates of internal components.

Thanks. Upgrade worked good but my backup of OE didn't seem to make it to the USB key so I'm having to setup stuff from scratch again but no big deal and probably better to have a fresh/clean install anyway.

Thank you so much! This made the process so easy and painless. Please let me know where I could make a small donation. In an era of so many open source options with scattered and somewhat nonexistent documentation this was a breath of fresh air.

Stupid question. Pulled out my Chromebox that has been unused since I first installed the standalone firmware and OE quite awhile back. I want to update to the newest standalone firmware and LE. For the firmware update I made the GalliumOS USB stick. After booting to the stick how do I run the script? As in how do I get to where I can actually type the command to update the firmware. It currently takes me to the GalliumOS with an install shortcut on the desktop.

By the way, thank you very much for all of your efforts.

the easiest thing to do will be to back up your existing OpenELEC userdata on USB (using the built-in function under OE settings/General), boot the GaOS USB and update the firmware (click the black terminal icon on bottom left, then copy/paste script command from the OP/my website), create fresh LibreELEC install media using the script (USB for this will be completely overwritten), reboot, install LE, then restore your OE backup.

This may or may not work well depending on how many versions difference there is, so you should be prepared to start fresh if need be.

Long time ago I use your (nice) script to install Openelec on my Asus...

Since openelec 7.0 is out I'm not able to update. I'm getting a size error after rebooting.

I was not able to create a usb stick with tuxboot to resize the partition (using gparted) because my asus keeps telling that its not bootable...

I'm a bit lost in what I'm must do since I'm no expert with these things.

Can someone please try and help me?

Regards,

don't use tuxboot, just dd (or cp) the ISO to the usb device. Or, use Etcher.
