RE: Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Jarvis / Krypton Fixed) [3.4.70 / 4.9.91-beta5] - Guardian Hope - 2016-12-13 Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Dormer) for Kodi 16 Jarvis
"Dormer End of Life Christmas Update" From Ashes to Ashes... The evolution of Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes, a project started just a little over a year ago on the Emby forums, has come full circle today. Initially conceived just to maintain support for the then upcoming Kodi 16 Jarvis, Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Dormer) has evolved and adapted; growing with an audience that had a demand for the continuation of Arctic Zephyr: Exploded. Far larger than we could have ever imagine, From Ashes Dormer brought about new experiences in the way you interacted with your media while staying true to its predecessor. Now, with this, the final release, support for Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Dormer is finally put to rest. Fret not for those of you still using Jarvis, the skin will work for as long as you need but you should prepare yourself for what's coming next. From Dormer to Caitlin Snow; Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age The next chapters in the From Ashes Project are upon us. In the coming weeks you will learn the full scope of Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers, the upcoming release for Kodi 17 Krypton which is in Preview and find out what lies beyond Danvers: Caitlin Snow - From Ashes to For Another Age. Skins coming together, new designs, the way you enjoy your media is going to change. There might even be a special surprise waiting for Caitlin Snow/For Another Age but nothing I can talk about right now. Danvers Preview Beta 6 is slated to be released before Christmas with Beta 7/RC1 coming in January to usher in the New Year. Caitlin Snow Development Platform Beta Preview is now in the planning stages. And yes, I may have hinted at something big in the phrase "Caitlin Snow Development Platform Beta Preview" that I will let you all figure out. We'll also be sharing how updates are going to work with two concurrently working branches: Danvers and Caitlin Snow as we move forward although you can rest assured that Danvers will be supported for the life of Kodi 17 Krypton while Caitlin Snow will be supported from Kodi 17 to Kodi 18 and beyond. A PDF document will be released with Danvers Preview BETA 6 explaining in further detail why the changes are occurring. Please note that this change will go into full force starting with Danvers Preview BETA 6. Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Dormer) and Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview) are currently licensed under the LGPLv3 license with a free for non-commercial use only statement. To learn more about this license you can find an easy breakdown at http://choosealicense.com/licenses/lgpl-3.0/ Starting with Danvers Preview BETA 6, Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes will be licensed under the AGPLv3 license with a free for non-commercial use only statement. To learn more about this license you can find an easy breakdown at http://choosealicense.com/licenses/agpl-3.0/ For nearly everybody this shouldn't really change anything. However, this change is being done to protect the contributions of developers and the community to the From Ashes Project. We hope by using the AGPLv3 we can further protect the rights of all contributors and grow an ecosystem of developers willing to contribute to the From Ashes Project as we move towards AZ:FA Danvers and later, Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age. If there are concerns or questions you would like answered before the release of the PDF explaining the reasons from changing from the LGPLv3 to AGPLv3 I am more than happy to answer them. I believe this has come up in the past and there is an issue with changing the license when parts of the code were authored/released by someone else. Relevant in this case I would think since this is a mod of a mod of Jurial Munkey's Arctic Zephyr. Just something to think about... In the end they all achieve the same thing. AGPL gives better grants to all contributors and whatnot while still retaining the reservations of LGPL or CC-BY-NC-SA (that's a mouthful). As long as everything stays open source which is the best part of Kodi, I haven't seen a problem; especially if you are granting more rights. The key is to always be free and open source and keep what needs to be compliant still compliant. In fact, Kodi itself is licensed under GPLv2. I don't think @Jurialmonkey has raised any issues with LGPL so I don't believe he will with AGPL on AZ:FA and an argument could be made that the two have diverged too far or are like Debian and Ubuntu. Also, and rather unfortunate, a lot of times Creative Commons licenses are largely ignored and have been on occasion deemed unenforceable. There was a skin on here once that was licensed by the same CC license and people started incorporating it into commercial projects resulting in the author unfortunately pulling his skin from download. Rule of thumb I have learned over the years: never license anything under Creative Commons unless it's a wiki page. RE: Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Jarvis Final / Krypton Fixed) [3.4.70 / 4.9.91-beta5] - osberg - 2016-12-15 Hi Guardian, I have been using your skin for the last week now. And so far all great... I have some ideas on things I think there is missing... 1: I am running tvheadend client on the my raspberry pi3, with your skin but when I go into Live TV, I am getting all my channels on the right and picture on the left, when I chose what channel I want to see, I cannot go to the picture and choose to get it big as I can in other skins. I have to press the exit button twice before I get the picture on my screen. ( I got serval Samsung TV in my house. ) Can this be fixed?? 2: There was one more thing, but can´t remember it right now hehe... I will back to that one.. Looking forward to hear your reply here.... I am just curious...how kodi would fit into retail purposes. The pvr section of the skin hasn't been looked at in a while and it is on the to-do list but this should solve your problem in the mean time. Also is there alternativ client that can work with tvheadend server?? I am facing a strange issue https://tvheadend.org/boards/5/topics/6712?r=23963 I can change channel 3-4-8 times and the picture freezes, but the sounds keep running in the background.... I have to press stop and go into live-tv again before it works. Any suggestions here RE: Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Jarvis Final / Krypton Fixed) [3.4.70 / 4.9.91-beta5] - bzowk - 2016-12-16 Hey Guys - Thanks for an excellent skin! Quick question, please. I just went to using "From Ashes" on my dedicated Kodi box after a rebuild. When switching between the Movies / TV Shows / Videos menus, "Please Wait..." pops up on the screen for a couple of seconds - I assume while it's caching fanart. Don't get me wrong - I love having fanart displayed - I just know once the wife starts to use it she'll complain about this as it causes latency . When using the original Artic Zephyr, I had fanart shown, but didn't have this issue. I've tried changing many things to get it to go away, but can't find out why it's occurring. Any suggestions? Thanks again!! First, welcome @bzowk to From Ashes and we hopefully look forward to you enjoying it as your cinematic experience on Kodi for a very long time. I read you signature which seems to outline the dedicated Kodi box and while From Ashes is definitely more resource intensive in comparison to the original Arctic Zephyr (also a lot larger in size) as you have guessed, the "Please Wait..." is indicative of a background action occurring that is required for a foreground operation. I don't want to blame your system specifications because From Ashes is run on Raspberry Pi's for goodness sake but on Windows 10 Pro, 4GB isn't a lot of memory to play with. Obviously, getting fan art is several operations that have to occur: if it's not cached it has to reach out to the internet, retrieve the art, save the art to cache, and display the art. However, you have an SSD so it should be really snappy for you unless you have a lot of background apps open. May I ask what's the speed of your internet connection and whether or not your setup is dual-ethernet enabled as your signature notes that your library is pulled from a networked device. Like I said, I don't want to blame your specifications as I know you have used to the original AZ but AZ:FA is also a lot more intensive so every avenue has to be explored. Also, do you use an addon server like Emby for example? AZ:FA was built to work really well with Emby (it's where this skin came from) and it has a lot better library management options than default Kodi but you have only 40GB of library (that's like 2-4 movies in my eyes) and I have terabytes so I don't think you're quite there yet where you would need finite control (but I do recommend it). Lastly, I also see you are using 16.1 (Jarvis - AZ:FA's Dormer line); any reason to not make the jump to Krypton (AZ:FA's Danvers line)? A release this week is going to fix the missing icons and would provide a better experience for you. I just want to make sure that since you just rebuilt your dedicated Kodi box that you get the best possible experience. I'm running your latest alpha on my Nvidia shield however also run the latest Kodi nightly. I'm getting white dialogue boxes which means you cannot see any selections on the menu. Reinstalling to an older nightly sorts this but didn't know if it will affect your skin? Hope that makes sense? We haven't really touched PVR because Danvers was supposed to get a redesigned layout but that's been pushed to Caitlin Snow (For Another Age). The reason for that is two fold actually: the updated design layout that will be featured in For Another Age and a little special project currently named Jyn Erso (or as I like to call it, "Project Erso") that may play a huge role in the development of For Another Age if it gets off the preliminary planning stage. There might be a 'quick fix' that can be coded into Danvers but the earliest feature change release won't happen until 2017. BETA 6, releasing this weekend, is only intended to address some outstanding issues of BETA 5. Looking through the Danvers list there are still a number of things needing addressing; it's just been a situation of 'we're all really busy right now with the holidays and stuff.' So I can easily wait for a later version that will get new features and design... Thank you for your understanding about the little issues - we want to get the big things hammered down first before circling back around To be honest, I am not sure about the picture freezing. I don't personally use PVR in Kodi but some of the users here do so perhaps one can maybe lend some help. If Project Erso goes as planned, PVR will be getting a makeover of a lifetime to support something compatible with M-Cards but until Project Erso's logistical stuff is worked out, I can't really discuss it. It'll get a makeover either way with For Another Age but how deep it goes will really depend on whether Erso gets off the ground. I use a Samsung 4K Smart SUHD TV (actually, I have several of them; one of the reasons that Caitlin Snow will get 4K suitable textures as while 1080p looks adequate with upscaling it would be better to support 4K native; I'm not even certain if Kodi can do that yet) but the only time I encounter 'picture freezing' is either due to network load (I have multiple Ubuqiti routers and switches to push a Gigabit home connection but my LAN is pushing Terabytes a day so there are times of congestion) or in the case of my Mac, system load (it's old; it's a mid-2010 13" Core 2 Duo 2.66GHs with the 320M). Those are the only reasons I can think of for 'picture freezing' - network congestion or system load as Kodi has the codecs built in (it's a point of contention for me to not have finite control through K-Lite Codec Mega Pack like with WMC pre-Windows 10 but I've gotten used to it as Team Kodi seems to have done a great job). (2016-12-15, 20:08)smitchell6879 Wrote: What would a commercial application be that would use kodi? I am just curious...how kodi would fit into retail purposes. Kodi is used in commercial purposes quite often. Think of all of those boxes that run Kodi (like those you can buy from OSMC, etc.). However, when 'commercial application' is defined here it really means 'hey, if you're going to put this in a commercial product you need to let us know because all those people are going to seek help from us and not you.' Since GPL licenses scare away most commercial companies who will then seek to pay for an alternative license, their payment can then be donated for example to the XMBC Foundation which makes Kodi. The move from LGPL to AGPL is also to allow contributors more rights and recognition for their work. It also has to do with Erso and the Caitlin Snow branch. It's also another way to go after any potential 'piracy box' sellers that try to use AZ:FA. Like I said, there's a lot going on with the From Ashes Project for 2017. Of course, it's also important to remember that Dormer's license won't change: it will be LGPLv3 as it's reached End of Life. Danvers BETA 6 or later and Caitlin Snow will be AGPLv3. I know what you're talking about and usually when that happens it means you have a version of AZ:FA that doesn't contain the texture packages. Assuming you meant 'beta' and not 'alpha,' I don't think a Danvers release left out a texture package. It'll be something that will be looked into going forward. From my understanding, the nightlies now show Kodi as version 18; at least someone told me that? It's possible there was a bug in the nightly or their was a change that will need to be addressed but BETA 6 won't fix it; it's only going to restore icons that have been missing since the font changes in Danvers. I want the team to have the holidays to themselves to spend with their family and once I get BETA 6 out the door there won't be any updates until 2017 with hopefully the first Release Candidate (or BETA 7). |
