Just to chime in in one last time, about the polling... Agreed, it wont make it happen, imho not at all a tool to gage that, imo polling is merely a tool to gage user interest not to let said manifested results dictate if one feature should be or not added.

it's a false tool Smile polling only shows those that participate in the poll and ignores a very large cross-section of users that might never see the poll or don't care to participate in said poll. I put as much faith in such polls as I do when news orgs do a poll and you find out they only asked 100 people and somehow this turns into what the nation thinks Smile

I have a challenge for the devs who don't think that this feature makes sense in XBMC: "Don't knock it 'til you've tried it." That is, pull up VLC and play The Daily Show or The Colbert Report at 1.1x or 1.2x. Even at 1.1x, you'll be save two minutes in a 22-minute file, and I don't think that you'll notice any weird audio issues. Your reaction may be one of the following:

1. I hated it. Why would anyone want that?
2. Not for me, but I can see how it would be useful to others.
3. I thought it was great! Let's get rolling on this feature in XBMC!

I'm confident that your reaction will be closer to #3 than #1, but even a #2 might spur you to take a look at implementing the feature.

I spent several minutes browsing through both codebases trying to figure out where I'd even start trying to add a feature like this. The learning curve is pretty steep. On the other hand, as seasoned XBMC developers, I'm sure you'd know right where to begin.

At this point, I'd guess that more time has been spent arguing over why this feature shouldn't be implemented than it would take someone who knew what they were doing to get a beta version of the change working.

I doubt that - even without spending "several minutes" *cough* on our codebase ...

HAHAHAHAAHAHA

Would it be possible to sponsor this feature? How much would it cost?

It doesn't work like that.

I guess I am forced to give up on this. My employer does not allow code submission to open source projects, not that I would necessarily have the knowledge to make such a change anyway. While I will not stop using XBMC, I am surprised at the feedback and community the developers foster on here. From blanket indifference on a feature request to the outright judgement and derision, this is not what I expected to find from the open source community and even more so from the highly active XBMC community.

I am not even sure how you can accurately judge whether such a feature would not be used, but maybe you know your audience base really well. Though, maybe not as well as you thought. Wink

I do believe in this feature and I am not just complaining. I would put whatever money I can towards sponsoring a feature, but it seems that does not work on here either. I hope you can understand my frustration.

At exhibitions like linuxtag or scale (usa) we talk to alot of real users. Last year 80% demanded "PVR". This year 80% said "its fine as is". In the last 3 years by talking to a lot of users - nobody requested anything from maybe 80% of all this feature requests in this forum.

So what does this mean. Are those exhibition visitors (which are just common people!) niche? Or are some users in the forum niche? Its a fact that people who want one feature badly treat it as show stopper for a product like XBMC when it doesn't full fill the request.

And its a fact that whatever users expect from us as open source team in some places is not fullfilled (call it unprofessional customer handling or what not. I call it "my private opinion" and nobody can say anything against it.)

RE: Speed up playback watching video (include 1.1x to 1.5x ffwd rate with audio)? - MarsianMan - 2014-05-15

I would definitely argue that linuxtag and scale attendees are niche users, but to be fair I would say that about the forum as well. I would imagine most XBMC users never bother to do anything other than download and use the software.

If use cases or examples are to sway the argument I would provide, but I do not think that is the case any longer. I give up.

P.S. I know I come across as discontent and unhappy, but I still want to thank you guys for the time and effort creating a great software. I have been using XBMC back from the old Xbox days and I have been greatly enjoying the advancements that have come to XBMC.

For what it's worth, I would appreciate having slow motion in XBMC. Sometimes it's nice to fully appreciate details.

Along the same lines, but easier I think (and maybe worth of a separate suggestion?): what about a bindable action to go frame by frame?

Hi, I just registered to subscribe to this thread. I'd also love this feature! Coming from PS3 (1.5x) and now using Pi (raspbmc) as a VideoPlayer. For all the above mentioned reasons, but mostly for Anime with jap audio and eng subtitle.

I also think this is a feature that would be great in XBMC. I personal use variable playback speed for:

- Fixing badly encoded files (for example a PAL encoded NTSC tv show, that´s just one fps off... but I can tell, and it drives me nuts)
- Lynda.com and Digital Tutors videos. Sometimes you want the tutor to go faster. (I sometimes play them at 1.9x)
- When I'm analyzing a move (usually one I already watched), and taking notes. Watching a movie in 2x is really illuminating; as good an exercise as watching one without music, or without sound.

So far I use VLC, but since I have all this media on my XBMC/TV set, it's kind of a drag to get the mouse and keyboard out and start using the windows explorer interface.

You are aware that mythtv does this right?

No I didn't. I'm going to check it out. Thanks.
