RE: Asus/HP ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC or Ubuntu+XMBC) [v2.18a - 2014/09/03] - Gulliver.x - 2014-09-05

Hi Matt,

Thanks a great deal for your good work.

Just a good info for the newbies or you may wish to include this finding on your note section.

Actually the dual boot doesn't work with certain type of keyboard. One of the example is Logitech K400®. I don't think this mean that any part of the installation is broken. But I highly suspect that it may due to the way Chromebox loading the driver. Switching to normal USB keyboard would resolve it.

Nevertheless, the keyboard is usable when you inside the system. Just doesn't work on boot up where it won't catch your ctrl D or ctrl L. It would work on whatever default your login thereafter.

Took a great while for me to discover the problem after rerunning multiple recovery/reinstallation. Pardon me for my Linux skill. Big Grin

Think I read that already, from the wiki

Quote:Installation:
Some keyboards seem to have issues working on the ChromeOS developer boot screen (before the OS is booted), and therefore cannot be used to setup/install XBMC on a ChromeBox. The Logitech K400 is one of these, so use another keyboard to install if yours doesn't appear to be working.

Found an interesting issue with the HP on the fan.

If I watch TV in windowed mode : fan is loud
Go fullscreen : instantly goes silent

Matt, could it be worth testing xbmcbuntu and check if it's openelec or chromebox related ?

edit :

more details, using top in both situations (on a SD interlaced stream 3-4mb/s)

1. Windowed :
CPU: 28.8% usr 5.7% sys 0.4% nic 63.7% idle
XBMC process is responsible for the load.

2. Fullscreen
CPU: 7.2% usr 4.0% sys 0.4% nic 87.0% idle

Checking on the NUC i3 haswell running same openelec (both install made this week, no tweaks, should be exact same settings, ethernet wired, etc...)

1. Windowed :
CPU: 6.4% usr 1.9% sys 0.1% nic 86.3% idle

2. Fullscreen
CPU: 3.0% usr 2.0% sys 0.2% nic 94.2% idle

Why is the difference that important on the chromebox ?

Is it just straight forward to update the coreboot from a standalone OpenElec setup by running the script via the command line?

Edit

Scratch that got the answer - http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=ASUS_Chromebox#Updating_Coreboot

RE: Asus/HP ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC or Ubuntu+XMBC) [v2.19 - 2014/09/06] - ant_thomas - 2014-09-06

this is why you don't post things at 3am - forgot to push out the script update (or more precisely, copy my test script over to the main one)

should be good to go now

Great, working now.

I seem to be 1 step closer to the ideal setup with the ability to boot "headless".

Current setup is Standalone OpenElec Chromebox -> Pulse Eight CEC adapter -> AVR -> TV.

With the new coreboot OpenElec will boot and turn on the AVR and TV over CEC but the screen is blank. If I boot with the TV already on everything is fine.

Code:
chromebox:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-HDMI-A-1 # cat enabled && cat status
disabled
disconnected

I did use a udev script for a previous J1900 based OpenElec system that suffered a similar issue but that doesn't seem to work.

Anyone having any issues with 13.2 all skins are incompatible? Also NaviX and many other addons are as well. Am I missing something or is this just because 13.2 is so new? If so should I revert to an older version to make these items compatible?

Thanks!

Update the repo. That helps

How does this compare to the older coreboot firmware you were presumably running before?
