Hi, I downloaded the xbmc-retroplayer-17alpha1.zip file however when trying to install on Kodi 15.2 (Sony Android Tv) I get a error message saying addon does not have the correct structure, any suggestions as to what I can do to get it to work?

it certainly does not work like that. You need to install retroplayer 17 and not as a zip

ive downloaded the zip, if I don't install the zip to kodi what do I install?

It's not an addon. It's a complete Kodi installation which you need to install through an APK.
