For everyone who is interested I compiled a recent version of the ffmpeg dlls with cabac patch (revision 13007).

wooooooow drastic less cpu utilisation drop from 50 % to 20% max on 1080p

now is the range 10 to 20%

same problem with 1080i playback .... no audio no video it hangs on open file

I don't think that this is a general issue. tried several HD samples which play fine (beside some skipped frames due to my slow CPU)

Improved CPU usage. But 720p MKV is still jerky from time to time (not as smooth as MCP on the same machine). Interestingly info pane doesnt report any dropped frames.

Hi WiSo!

I have approx 30% load on a AMD 4800+ playing 1080p. I think these DDLs gives the smoothest playback so far.
For fair comparison shouldn't we all be using the same set of HD streams? Maybe you could add a link to the haviest HD samples you have so we can test with the same.
Must say I like the approach of a dev sitting in slow CPU that should produce effective code.

Update!

Seems that jerky playback has EVERYTHING to do with the amount of video memory. I have 2 exactly same laptops Dell Latitude D820. Both have nvidia video cards with discrete, dedicated memory. One has 128MB and second has 256MB. XBMC is set to 1680x1050 res and video playback is set to the same value. On a 120mb machine i have jerky playback, also GUI isnt smooth at all. On a 256mb machine everything works smoothly. So amount of video memory is also crucial for XBMC.

Sounds good even the overall feedback sounds good and we should use the newest ffmpeg if possible.
Would be nice if one of you could provide some sample links to different HD content since my knowledge in this direction is very limited.
If a few are posted I can update the wiki with the links to the example content.

This is the infamous "Bird Scene" discussed here - using mplayer from CCCP, I get a slow 9 frames/second on my desktop (Dual Core AMD)

From what I understand, this sample is one of the most extreme examples of HD encoding, and you're not likely to run into many videos with this amount of bitrate. Still, it's a nice goal to shoot for...

Yep this is the premium example I also use for testing Wink
Also only 9-11fps on my Athlon X2 3800.

With the bird test, I get 24 fps maxed CPU. With Media Player Classic using CoreAVC, I get 30+ fps at 80% utilization. I'm running an Athlon X2 4200 with a Geforce 7600 GT. Hope this helps.
