So I read the web pages on how best to name and structure the video source for best ingestion into Kodi but sometimes I use devices which don't have Kodi. E.g. I'll use a PC/laptop and navigate to the video source in Windows Explorer to start playing the movie. I know I can install Kodi on these devices but I prefer the simplicity of just playing the movie directly from Windows Explorer. However, the list of movies is getting long and I'm now starting to think I need to create a movie set folder to help make things easier when navigating directly to Windows Explorer. Is this a bad idea or should I look to use Kodi for all access to movies so it provides the grouping automatically?

For me Kodi is the media player I use with a remote to watch stuff on the TVs.

On a computer, use Kodi if and only if you desire to enjoy the beautiful fanart and poster made for a movie, for a second or two; you also get plot summary, rating, and a release date among other details. Otherwise, Windows Explorer will get you watching much quicker; it is a 5 seconds vs 4 seconds thing.

Whether you like to have individual folders for sets or like to put all movies beside each other, Kodi has the ability to ingest them. Kodi will also allow you to choose how you'd like to see stuff: open a set to see its movies or have a flat list of all movies next to each other.

Also, I might be one who has OCD in this regards, but I name my folders properly as Movie Name (Year); whether I use Kodi or not, finding them is easy. If your folder names are a mess, don't hesitate, jump on to Kodi. I feel if you have a single folder which is named movie.name.year.x265.something, then you don't have my type of OCD and have to use Kodi.

If by "movie set" you mean movie collections (Star Wars, Toy Story, etc.) or movie genres (westerns, crime drama, war movies) I think you'll find that organizing them in your video source is helpful, and works fine with Kodi also. For example, my video source drive looks like this:

But if you look in the "Marvel" folder, it looks like this:

Everything is easy to find in Windows Explorer, and Kodi scrapes it all perfectly.

(Yes, I know, way too many comic book movies... )
