Updating after 6 years: XBMC on OpenElec, where now? - antispam246 - 2018-10-14

Hi, been over 6 years since I last posted, surprised my account still exists, anyway;

I'm looking to get back up and running and looking for advice on my route, I can see there are so many more options available. 6 Years ago I opted for openelec on a standalone HTPC (Acer Revo RL70), I'm hoping to stick with the same hardware, if it's still viable (it still work fortunately). I recall I was very torn between windows and openelec back on the day but eventually opted for it for whatever reason(s). Obviously, depending on my hardware etc.. I'm wondering if windows 10 is viable or if openelec is still best and I udnerstand that will be partially down to my requirements.

Essentially I'm just looking to stream tv/film from my NAS/homeserver. I know there's a tonne load more you can do and I guess keeping options open is always handy. I am alot more familiar with wondows than linux alternatives but I managed openelec very easily and liked the out the box feel.

So, assuming a fresh install and with my hardware as an HTPC what's my best path?

Hardware:
CPU: AMD E-450 APU 1.65GhzAMD E-450 APU 1.65Ghz
RAM: 4GB (Kingston 2GB DDR3 1Rx8 PC3-10600S-9-10-810 x 2 ACR256X64D3S13C9G)
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6320
SSD: OCZ Solid 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD 120GB

Has wifi but will be running via powerline adapter until I can get hard wired options up and running

Many thanks!

Libreelec.
Try it from a usb stick to test, it should work fine.

Unfortunately my TV is not capable of supporting direct USB options, so ideally looking to reuse my current setup as above.

Boot your HTPC from the LibreELEC USB drive. You can run it "live" from the USB stick.

Thanks. I opted for OpenELEC on the same hardware, all up and running. I'm wondering if the hardware is necessary. I have an unused fire stick and rasperry pi, is there any particular reason why a more fully fledged HTPC would be better than those? Assuming I'm merely using them for film and tv. At what specific sort of usage is more/better hardware becoming a necessity or is it that all the small form factor htpcs these days simply have more than enough now?

OpenELEC is obsolete and not supported at this forum. As stated twice already, move to LibreELEC.

There is no support for any issues you encounter.

Thank you, wasn't aware. As I haven't really installed too much yet, clean install of libreelec or attempt to transfer over? Only using plexiconnect right now.

Just do a clean install if you don't have anything to lose - 6 years is a long time, and LibreELEC can't guarantee a successful upgrade from such an old installation (it may work, in fact it probably will work, but there's always the chance it won't, or it leaves behind a lot of unnecessary cruft).
