Can we fork TV Tunes - Cinephile - 2019-08-09

The original TV Tunes add-on still works a charm for me on Leia 18. What gives? Aeon MQ8 likely hasn’t dropped support for this, which might explain why.

I always created my own mp3 files so never understood the controversy. Couldn’t they have just disabled the download functionality?

No point in re-hashing the history of this.  Bottom line is the addon did not meet Kodi rules.

The addon is under GNU Licence. Why not just create a fork, rip the "kodi rules violating" parts out, and make a re-release and develop it further.
There are several Kodi forks, Skin forks out there... Who says an Addon fork should be forbidden?

RE: TV Melodies (play themes alternative) - DarrenHill - 2019-08-10

They aren't forbidden, as long as the license of the original is obeyed.

Then let's revive the addon

Sounds like a plan.. you guys should fork that add-on and start a new one or you could fork this one and make pull request and help it get better. I am just one person with a life just like you. I don't have time every night to contine to update something that I am not even using myself. If there was enough interest along with help I would gladly help.

I actually thought this would be the way to go, but not sure it could be accepted in the official repo and maintaining it outside to official repo would be tough.

Also then?:

@manfeed
I do not know if I remember correctly, but some time ago you would have shown interest? Or?
  • fork, rename the project
  • rip all kodi rule violating stuff out, adapt it to kodi rules
  • update for Leia/Matrix
The main problem was previously...
  • only the maintainer (we do not want to talk about it)
  • the implementation of the hidden malware software stuff
  • and the automatic webservice download (copyright issue stuff)
  • changed licence of maintainer (not even allowed cause takes over the project of original author and cannot claim the original author source code as own)
And if there should still be thought, then just take over the source code from the penultimate original maintainer. Because there was still everything fine and kodi officially accepted.

I'm afraid I don't know how to code in python, sorry...  Sad

RE: TV Melodies (play themes alternative) - malvinas2 - 2019-08-24

Fork of TvTunes:

- download function removed from source code
- no user data is uploaded
- GPL 2.0

RE: Can we fork TV Tunes - Karellen - 2019-08-26

Split posts from the TV Melodies thread. Lets leave that for support of that add-on and discuss TV Tunes "legalisation" here.

RE: Can we fork TV Tunes - latts9923 - 2019-08-26

I've been granted control of the TV Tunes Add-on from the original author on GitHub. I inquired about getting a new version of the Add-on back on the official repo. Currently I'm looking at renaming the Add-on to avoid any confusion on the forum about whether or not it is still banned.

@malvinas2
I see your two commits on GitHub.

More to come...

**Update**
I got an update from @Karellen...I have the OK to submit a new version of TVTunes to the Kodi repo.

sorry @manfeed i confused it, it was @latts9923 had interest on re-release on a new and cleaned version.

@latts9923 When the new recoded addon complies with the rules, and you rename it establish it as a new brand then we can talk about it again here.
Quote:whether or not it is still banned.
...a fork and recode is in fact a new Addon an it's own, no reason to ban a new Addon wich follows the rules.

I would call it for example "Play Themes" or "Media Themes"

RE: Can we fork TV Tunes - latts9923 - 2019-08-28

@"chrissix"

No need to rename the Add-on...I have the OK to submit as an updated version of TVTunes.

RE: Can we fork TV Tunes - rschiks - 2019-08-28

What would the new version do then exactly? It was all about the tunes being (automatically) downloaded, right?
