High CPU usage in idle mode - SimBla - 2008-07-27

Hi,

I recently experience a new xbmc bug. I performed a clean new Windows installation. Then I installed xbmc with aeon skin. Everything woked just fine but after i added some backdrops and updated the library i had a really high cpu usage...

I diabled the library and removed the backdrops but nothing helped! The CPU ist constantly over 50% and it used to be by 0%!

Anybody an idea?

SimBla

OH NOES so many details ! no idea where to begin

OH WAIT where is the GPU info Huh

- SimBla - 2008-07-27

OK, maybe to much information Smile

this is my pc:

CPU: AMD 64 X2 4800+
Mobo: Asrock Alive NF6g-GLan with onboard GPU Geforce 6150 SE
512 MbRam
Windows XP

XBMC worked, until one hour ago, fine! Then I made some various changes and now, when I do nothing the CPU is alway over 50%. When I watch a movie (even 720P) the CPU drops under 20%. I tried do undo every change I made but I still have this high CPU usage...

any idea?

I solved this problem now. Diabled threaded-optimization in nvidia options.
Now I have a CPU usage about 7%. Is this normal. It seems still pretty high...

for me, the task manager always reports xbmc.exe running at 90+% when in the gui. it's actually much much lower when playing video, 10% or under. i just took this as "normal." but i've got an ancient machine -- a P4-1.7Ghz, 1GB of ram, and a GeForce 5600 -- so im not complaining. im just happy it even runs Smile

This is a known issue (search the forum)

@kraqh3d: check your driver. might be the same problem Nod

i;ll have to look for that option in my nvidia control panel. i dont recall ever seeing it.

You won't on a P4. It should only show up on dual or quad core CPU's.

i didnt think so. i figured it was related to a multi-core processor... bummer. oh well. at least xbmc runs on my old development box.

There's a fix in plex which might be related: http://github.com/elan/xbmc-fork/commit/0c1e226ac632f956b4bad2fd3458d6bc6a115409
Not sure if this fixes this particular issue as well.

Would the Windows port be affected by http://trac.xbmc.org/changeset/14430 as well? Reverting that change fixed it on Linux.

- WiSo - 2008-07-31

Don't think so. Windows has only one line there: SDL_GL_SwapBuffers();

I'm seeing the same thing and I get 50-60% running windowed and 5% or so when playing a dvd. I see that it's a known issue. Is it normal that only core0 shows up? Here is a log running xbmc windowed, played a dvd, then closed http://pastebin.ca/1090068 and one with it fullscreen, play dvd, close http://pastebin.ca/1090071. I don't know if that is of any use, but I guess it can't hurt. I'm running a C2D E6420 overclocked to 3.2, 2 gigs of ram and a geforce 8600gt 256mb.

WiSo, should we put this into Trac?

I don't know about you, but I think this should have rather high priority. Having the CPU running at 100% and not being able to powersave (I'm guessing the problems are linked) is quite serious. I, for one, really don't want to use it on Windows before those problems are fixed.

Cheers.

Sure everything should go to trac with as most information as possible but I don't think this is related to not going into power safe mode.
