X96q with latest Kodi only Stereo output - Posty - 2020-07-15

I have been trying to get anything but stereo output from the X96q Android 10 media player to my Marantz NR1609 without any success and have tried contacting the supplier who suggested trying the AV port.
(Note: Not an AV expert)
Android 10 support only offers output mode to Audio_Codec or Audio_HDMI and as all equipment is connected via HDMI 2.0 to the Marantz it's the only connection that gives any sound. PS: All other devices give 5.1 and 4k etc playback just fine.

Have updated the X96q Kodi to the latest version 18.4 and tried (I believe) every single combination for 2 days and the best I can ever achieve is Stereo input to the Marantz.
source files have been tried in various format X264 X265 6 Channel 2 channel etc which should all be supported by Kodi. The previous player has 17.6 and I could get 5.1 by simply selecting 2 channels with Passthru on and Dolby on with EAC and DTS off.
I'm stumped.

Not sure if its the Audio settings in Android 10 or Kodi.  I have tried selecting and deselecting Passthru on the Android Side.
The Marantz definitely handles almost anything on the input side but from this box, only Stereo ??
Previous player was the X93 with Kodi 17.6 and gave DTS but did give 5.1 at least >

I have the same issue with X96Q. Try installing the Nova Video Player app and enabling audio passthrough on it.
I think the cause is Android, that does not allow full access to the device's hardware. For example: in the KD player, changing the screen resolution is not allowed, it is fixed at 720p. I have Kodi installed on a Raspberry Pi and I can change the resolution normally. Even Dolby and DTS audio work on the Raspberry, but not on the X96Q. If anyone knows anything different, I appreciate the help.

Unfortunately it started locking up and freezing so no choice but to find a replacement. I just purchased the Q+ with Android 9 and yep no Dolby Digital at all, will install your suggested Nova Video player and see how it performs. I connect to another shared windows folder on my network so the player has to access my folder structure but will see how it goes. Might also try a rollback to the old 17.6 as an option.

Feels like Kodi is going backwards in their performance not forward...

Cheers

I Tried installing the Nova Video Player on the Q+ Android 9 box thru the store and it gave an error ?? Would love an alternative if I can get full digital audio out of this thing.

Got the latest version of Nova Video Player and tested with passthru on HDMI still PCM Stereo only. The chipset on the Q+ is a Cortex-A53 processor and Mali T720MP2 but apparently, according to Nova website
"- AC3/DTS passthrough (HDMI or S/PDIF) on supported hardware: Nexus Player, NVidia SHIELD TV, Rockchip and AmLogic based TV-boxes'

Might need to looks for a Rockchip or AmLogic tv-box perhaps ? The NVidia SHIELD is a bit expensive but passes digital audio.

OK thru much testing, actually a LOT of testing due to the vast number of options available in both Android and Kodi I got it working on the Q+ Android 9.0 box.
I think the main settings were to disable Stereo upmix and set number of channels to 7.1
The Marantz then receives the signal as Multi Ch for most videos. This was contrary to almost all advice to set the audio channels to 2.0
The Marantz system is then set to AUTO and Android sound is set to Passthru with HDMI as the only output.
I installed Kodi 19.0 Beta 2 manually after trying back as far as 17.6 and a few 18 versions. This was done manually cause Play Store failed to install latest... maybe needed a cleanup from all the attempts.
Anyway this was a success and NOVA player probably also works fine with similar settings configured.

The main KODI settings were:
Number of Channels          7.1
Stereo Upmix                    OFF
Allow Passthru                  on
Dolby Digital AC3 Capable  on
DTS-HD Capable Receiver  on

Android 9.0 Sound
Allow  Passthru                on
Audio Output Mode          AUDIO_HDMI

MARANTZ NR1609 Settings:
Tested OK in Following     Direct
                                      Direct Pure
                                      AUTO

Only one movie failed to put out sound with an enhanced AAC DTS-EX type of encoding but turning off passthru for that one movie still gave full multi-channel 5.1 sound so still a win??

RE: X96q with latest Kodi only Stereo output - fritsch - 2021-01-16

Your settings make limited sense (you see that your box tells to support DTS-HD _and_ AC3, which for the first is definitely not true). Just turn passthrough off and be happy that you can output multi-channel, which is what your box falls back to, when opening the others fails.

To know what I am saying: Keep your settings as is and play that sample please: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rxbcshobrwsn2ej/TEST.TOOL.Ac3%20Dolby%20Digital%205.1Ch%20Sound%20Test.avi?dl=0 - what does your AVR say while it's running?

Do you still have this streamer? What does your Marantz app show when you play multi channel audio? mine always upmixes from stereo. I have the X96Q Pro+ (based on Allwinner H728) with similar shitty audio output.

RE: X96q with latest Kodi only Stereo output - Posty - 2024-09-30

I still have the Q+ working fine. The Marantz just shows "Multi In" and only ever outputs 5.1 regardless of the audio 5.1 or higher. I have held off trying a higher release of Kodi in case I get all the problems again. It works so I leave it alone with same settings as shown.

I am getting only "fake" surround as the receiver is taking the stereo PCM and expands it to 5.1 - so it cannot give me the original audio of the video. is that what's happening with yours? my Marantz App clearly shows stereo PCM input.

RE: X96q with latest Kodi only Stereo output - Posty - 2024-10-01

No I get full digital output. I am using the hdmi output on the media player direct to marantz. Only time it reverts to pcm 2 channel is if the actual media file is only Dolby digital 2.0 then it just gives stereo. The marantz is smart enough to downscale 7.1 I to 5.1 but just remains as multi In.
I did get stuck a lot in PCM when first testing and sent an older media player back, as it just never worked. The Q+ player actually worked

Mine is the x96q pro+ , a brand new model with a brand new chipset. I have tried every setting possible, and still only get PCM2.0 input.

RE: X96q with latest Kodi only Stereo output - Posty - 2024-10-02

You using the hdmi highest rating for picture + audio? I had to buy a better cable after I had a 1.0 cable. Think mine is a 1.4 can't remember

RE: X96q with latest Kodi only Stereo output - Posty - 2024-10-02

Once you set the Android settings work on the kodi setup trying different options
I returned mine and bought a Q+
