Hang when accessing folders of images - bossanova808 - 2020-11-17
I have noticed, just in the past few months, that a variety of Kodi machines (Odroid N2s, but also full blown Windows PCs) experience hang(s) when I access folders of images - specifically if there are any new image in the folder (in the Kodi pictures section), or if the folder has not been visited before. The hang will last up to about a minute or more on the humble machines, or 15+ seconds even on pwoerful PCs) - and the system will be basically non responsive to all input during that time (will occasionally respond after several seconds but often not at all).
The images are all standard JPG images (all sized to fit 1920 by 1080 - photos of family/friend/nature exported from Lightroom). Folders might have anywhere from 20 to 150 images, but the hang seems to happen if e.g. there are just 20 or so new images added to folder.
The images are accessed over NFS which is working perfectly for all other things, videos, music etc.
Initially I am trying to isolate the issue and find our whether others are experiencing similar? I have not yet dug into logs or anything, but my gut feeling is the reading of image metadata is choking the system somehow…once past the hang, the thumbnails generate on the fly as I page down ver quickly, so I don't think it is thumbnails per se.

As there's no library for pictures they'll be scanned every time you you access them. Are you using any advanced settings for image quality or running Kodi at a high resolution?

Nope, I am running Confluence, 1080p@60 - and no advanced settings for image quality (wasn't aware that was an option!).

I don't _think_ it is thumbnails, as those do seem to load quickly despite these hangs. I think it is metadata.
I remember seeing this go past - https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/18264/files - I wonder if it is related, the timing feels about right - but might not be!

Backup your userdata folder and try running a nightly build to see if that PR fixes the problem.

On my main PC at least (pretty powerful machine) - indeed no hangs with a recent Matrix. So maybe that is indeed a fix.
I can't really test on my Odroids as there's no Matrix for those yet, but very fast going through big folders with Matrix, that are hanging pretty consistently with Leia.
