Rapier and sub-folder - badbones - 2021-08-29

I am still new with this and playing along slowly.  I have a movie collection set up for my son and inside I have all his movies to keep them off the main wall.  This works fine for us.  Is it possible to have a collection inside a collection?  Example is I have my sons movie collection and lets call it Son.  All his movies are placed in there.  He has about 10 batman cartoon movies in there.  Is it possible to group those batman movies and call it Batman Collection and have that collection appear inside the Son Collection and not on the main wall?  I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

@badbones

Do you mean something like this...

I think thats the next level I want to go to once I get a good feel of this  transition.  Right now I am just trying to keep it simple and keep it on the Movies wall.

So the one on the upper left is his collection.  the second pic is whats inside.  I would like to group the batman stuff inside in its own folder there.  He has about 300 movies so this would consolidate it a bit.

I am not even sure how you did that.

Have you added all your sons movies into a single Movie Set? Same as you would for, say, John Wick Collection or The Hunger Games Collection?

If that is what you have done then, no, you cannot have a sub-collection within a collection. You will need to do what is in my image above.

Thats what I did.  I made my sons into its own movie set.  Was hoping to do a sub-set within it as well.   Once I finish my conversions (still many left and then tv shows) I will move onto what you did.  I think that would be the best, but was hoping for something simple at the moment.  More questions to come.....as I play with this more

Thank you

Ok. Don't continue with this, though. There is no conversion process from this method to any other method. Whatever time you spend on this method will be wasted and is limited as you are starting to discover.

Move straight onto my method.

It would be easiest if your sons movies are in their own Source folder. From there it is simple Smart playlists (wiki) to separate out the movies into their own section. Add them to the Favourites (wiki) menu, then you can use the Favourites method when creating the new menu items in Rapier.

OK  I will start playing with that...the good news is about 98% of his movies are all on one HDD and in his folder.  For his tv shows, I have a separate HDD for those and they are in his own folder?

From what I have read so far, there is no way to make a library for my son that contains both movies and TV shows?  I am assuming I need a library for each.

Correct. You cannot mix movies and tv shows. Separate library for each

I have been playing with the custom home items you had mentioned.  I have got it going somewhat but not liking how it is so far.  When I go into the custom home items I made, it goes into a folder structure, displaying a couple folders.  When I click on the folders it then opens into a movie icon wall.  From there it will not let me make a movie set?  did I do something wrong?

What I am hoping for is when I click on the custom home item I made, it will just go to a movie wall like when I click on the movies selection.  Is this possible?  and from there I can create or it will automatically make the movie sets like it does in the movies section.

Yes, this is possible. I guess you have made a boo-boo somewhere.

How have you separated your content to group your son's movies? Did you use a smart playlist? If all you have done is pointed to the folder, then that explains why you only get folders showing.

Need a little help...I created a custom category "Son" and a smart playlist called "Sons Movies".  Now I cant figure out how to link it to the Son category.  When I click on Son now, nothing happens.  It does not say to add anything either.  I know I am doing it wrong, but I dont know where I went wrong.  Has to be something simple.

Go to the list of Playlists.
Highlight "Sons Movies".
Call up the Context Menu and select Add to favourites
Also, double check your Smart playlists (wiki) works by clicking on it. Do the correct movies appear?

(2021-09-05, 00:31)badbones Wrote: Now I cant figure out how to link it to the Son category
Go to Skin Settings>Home>Add More Categories
Go to "Son" category
Under Button Properties:
Type-Favourite
Select "Path" and pick "Sons Movies" playlist from the Favourites Menu
Answer No when asked "Do you want to play the playlists instead of entering?"
Back out of Settings and now the new menu item should display the movie list from the playlist

Then you can create Sub-menus in the same way by using Skin Settings>Home>Category Submenu>Sons Movies

Perfect...Thank you... I did everything you outlined and selected Yes instead of no...I think when I did Yes it started playing a movie immediately.  I knew this was a simple mistake and once again thank you.  By chance any idea on my other thread question if a movie has extras it can display a symbol of some sort on the wall poster like it does with the played time symbol or a tv series the number of episodes in a season?

Yes, that has been asked quite a lot of times. Currently there is no way to do this as the Extras add-on needs to be completely rewritten.

The original author abandoned the project, and the new maintainer wanted to get it working for v19, but currently has no time to invest in this particular addon.
