Setting up Truenas to stream media - hyg71886 - 2021-12-22

I have been using kodi on a HTPC since 2012. Recently, I decided I would build a NAS server to have a smaller footprint in my av rack. I am building a 10bay NAS running Truenas, what I would like to do is have it running plex media server (bought a lifetime license back in 2012 when it was 75 bucks). However, I would also like to be able to stream directly to kodi for my theater room. I have found a guide to set it up with plex but not kodi on windows. Is anyone familiar with this or know where to start?

Kodi doesn't use the client-server model (like Plex does), we just have the Kodi device that can pull media from your network shares etc.

So there's nothing that needs to be installed on the NAS at all. All it needs to do is have suitable shares (usually either SMB or NFS) with the media in them that the Kodi device can see, and it will then be able to play back the files (presuming they're in a suitable format).

Essentially it's just the same kind of file sharing that you do on your network between the NAS and any other machine - there's nothing special in it being a Kodi device.

More details are on the wiki - HOW-TO:Create Video Library (wiki), especially the 2nd page about sources. Also see the pages on SMB (wiki) and NFS (wiki).
