Which OS/Build do I need? - ratzofftoya - 2022-02-07

Hey folks! I've got a fairly powerful HTPC with a dedicated GPU and all that jazz. That said, I still want the most minimal Kodi build I can have (so, OK with Librelec if that's all I need).

Here are the things I'd like to do:
  1. stream media from my home server, including UHD content
  2. use Netflix, Hulu (including live TV)...basically I subscribe to everything
  3. do retro gaming
  4. hopefully stream Steam games from my main PC (using advanced launcher or the Steam add-on)
Do I basically need to have Windows or a GUI Linux build? Or can I go with something like Librelec?

If you want something without any compromises then I think you'll struggle to cover all of those with one HTPC. It all depnds on your priorities as to what is most import to you, since Netflix on Windows/Linux is limited to 1080P, if that good enough then that might be the way to go, to get 4K from Netflix then you need an Android device, however that would then not meet your Steam requirement.

Hmm. What's the story behind the 4K Android requirement? Some kind of DRM? I though Windows allows for 4K, though I guess it might only be through the official Netflix app?

Yep DRM, and only Android supports the necessary DRM.

Hmm. I do have a Shield TV, which would let me stream through NVidia. Is that a good option? how customizable is the Kodi install on a Shield?

the shield is a very good choice, not sure about 4) on your list though.

If (s)he's got an Nvidia card in his PC, it's pretty straightforward using gamestream (on a Shield if that's the way they're going).
