How to enable video previews using animated artwork? - adama42 - 2022-09-26

Hi

What I'd like to have: when browsing through my movie collection (*) it would start playing a preview of that movie. Ideally in the foreground.
How I'd expect it to work: kodi detects something like a  $movie-trailer.gif (or .webm or .mp4, or maybe even a series of $movie-thumbs-01.jpg .. $movie-thumbs-20.jpg) and renders/plays that file.
(*) even better if it waits 1 or 2 seconds of inactivity before starting to play the preview

I've found some old and also some contradictory information on this. But couldn't get it to work.

This wiki https://kodi.wiki/view/Artwork_types#Animated_Artwork says
Quote:> The most comprehensive support for animated artwork is Skin Helper Service, which has taken to naming these as "animatedposter" and "animatedfanart". New animated movie posters (and textless posters / keyart which could be named "animatedkeyart")
But no real explanation how to get it to work.

This other thread https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=215727 says
Quote:> If you are already using local artwork, just place the .gif files the same way like your other artwork types are placed. If your movies are in folders and your clearlogo is called Moviefilename-clealogo.png, then use for poster Moviefilename-animatedposter.gif and for fanart Moviefilename-animatedfanart.gif.
I added a $movie-animatedfanart.gif to the movie folder, then refreshed my library, but it doesn't work.

Since some people got animated posters working I guess kodi does some animations. How do I get it to work?

Additionally, I'm also wondering if it's possible to get this to work for other video files like home recordings. So no tmdb entry, no poster, no .nfo file (or a very crude one). So folders with just a `$movie.mp4` and a `$movie-animatedfanart.gif` or the like files.

Thanks

@adama42

I think you are discussing two separate items.
Animated artwork is not a trailer.
Animated artwork is used the same way as posters and fanart are. They need to be correctly named and saved, then scanned into the library and the skin needs to support the display of animated artwork. An animatedposter will replace the normal poster that is displayed.

As for your actual question to auto play trailers while scrolling the library, I am not aware of anything like that. You would need to press the Trailer button to play the trailer... https://kodi.wiki/view/Trailers
You can auto-play themes while scrolling. If you are a programmer, maybe you can modify a theme addon to autoplay trailers?

My mistake in word selection. I should have called it $movie-preview.gif instead of $movie-trailer.gif

Although both animated artwork and trailers are a form of dynamic preview, they are indeed different. Which I understand require different functionality and support.
But actually both are things I'm interested in getting to work. Although it wasn't my intention to mix things up.

 Any suggestion on how do I figure out which skins/themes support animated artwork? Or do I need to go through/search the threads for each skin? Wondering if there's a smart way to do this.

Thanks. I was able to get trailers to work. In the file Movie listing, right click, Information, select and click Trailer.
I just took a quick look at https://kodi.tv/addons/matrix/skin.metropolis and I'm wondering if this is what you meant:
- edit the proper xml file, let's imagine skin.metrolopis/720p/FileBrowser.xml would do the trick, so it plays the $movie-trailer.mp4 after some timeout.
- alternatively, and probably simpler, could edit skin.metrolopis/shortcuts/trailers.DATA.xml file so it would play when the user presses a keyboard or remote key

Thanks for your help.

Not really. I know Aeon Nox Silvo displays animated artwork. Not sure which other skin does.
You can probably fool some skins by renaming animatedposter to poster.
Also, the animations don't work across networks. The animated artwork needs to be on the local drive.

@Edwinsarah

Which addon in Kodi are you using to log into popcornflix?

Is it this one... https://kodi.tv/addons/matrix/plugin.video.popcornflix
If you read the last few posts of the thread here, you will see it is no longer maintained... https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=198931

If its not the above addon, if you have a download link, that will be helpful.
