Can't adjust volume l/r balance - fivefingerdiscount - 2023-03-02

I have Kodi installed to an Android box, then connected through HDMI to my Hisense U8H TV set up without Google, ie: a dumb TV. I'm partially deaf in my right ear, and use headphones to watch TV, setting the TV's volume balance to +28 on the right ear. This works fine with my cable box through HDMI, but for some reason, it has no effect on Kodi. No matter what I pan the balance to, either full left or full right, there's still no change. I then decided to do a reset of my TV, then set up as a Google TV, then installed Kodi from the Play Store directly to the TV. Still no difference. Is there some setting in Kodi preventing this? I don't see how, but I'm out of ideas. I currently have the TV's audio piped out to a Raspberry Pi with a sound card, setting the balance through the Pi instead, but I'd much rather just connect my bluetooth headphones direct to the TV. With the Pi, although it 'works', I'm getting a situation where the volume goes silent in low volume scenes, then comes back when the scene's audio raises again, like in conversations. Even with the TV's volume cranked, it still drops out. It sounds horrible. Any ideas?

as far as kodi adjusting audio balance, it doesnt currently do this, it relies on the audio device to handle such things (tv,pi,soundcard, etc)

as far as low audio volume from pi, you might be able to use drc in advancedsettings - see here https://kodi.wiki/view/Advancedsettings.xml#audio

Thanks for the reply. I understand Kodi doesn't handle the balance but the TV does, but I can't understand why even with Kodi installed to the TV itself, the TV's balance slider doesn't affect Kodi like it does for the Netflix app, or through my cable box connected through HDMI. And even with the Pi connected through HDMI, the TV should control the incoming signal's balance like it does the cable box... but it doesn't, at least not for Kodi. That's what's baffling.

I figured out why my Pi was having issues... PulseAudio. Uninstalled it and using alsamixer on it's own seems to have solved the issue. It was like it needed a preamp to boost the incoming signal, which is why I cranked the TV's volume, then used an app on my phone to remotely control the Pi's volume. I'm using the Unified Remote app, with a customized button function layout to raise/lower right/left and overall volume. The audioInjector I'm using sound card did warn about PulseAudio, but I wanted to add an EQ, and that required Pulse. In the end, it actually sounds better without the EQ. :-p

Figured it out. I needed to disable Dolby Atmos... now the balance actually works on Kodi installed directly to the TV.
