External player for music... doesn't work great or am I missing something? - ashlar - 2023-05-19

For some music files encoded in a specific way I need to call an external player (foobar2000).

I know how to do that, I know how to have it activate only for the specific files for which it's needed.

BUT

I've discovered that the external players behavior for music files doesn't really work for... music files.

Often one plays an album, or a playlist. Problem is that the external player logic does not pass a playlist to the external player, just the single file. But once that's finished it doesn't move to the next one, as Kodi can't know when playback ends for a specific track (even if it did, it would destroy gapless albums anyway). Furthermore, if I start playing an album and I decide to stop... once I stop and exit from the external player, the next track is launched, stop/close, next track is launched, rinse and repeat until the album's last track has been launched.

I've searched but I can't find much about this. I suppose it is the way it is. If this is it... it's nigh useless for music.
