How to stream Kodi library over internet to Fire Stick with Tailscale or OpenVPN? - nooz - 2023-07-30
Any specific info on the best network protocol to stream my Kodi library over the internet to a Fire Stick running Kodi? (intended for use while away from home)
So far I have tried SFTP through my reverse proxy, but so far can only get 720p files to stream without buffering. 37Mbps line upload so med-high quality 1080p should be no real problem.
I've been looking into using Tailscale to access a local SMB share over the internet (both devices are on my tailnet), and I can get to the User/Pass prompt to access the share but it keeps getting denied. So I'm stuck here.
In the meantime, also looking into setting up OpenVPN on the host machine and somehow accessing media this way. But this seems kinda similar to Tailscale though, unless I'm mistaken?
Any suggestions would be great here, thanks.

As per our VPN policy (wiki), don't expect any support from us for Kodi problems/challenges using a VPN.

SMB over the Internet will have a few challenges. I'd suggest starting with the Kodi sharing Wiki page which has solutions that can share Kodi libraries over the Internet.

what you need is a proper streaming server as jbinkley60 pointed out instead of trying to use file sharing options over the internet
37Mbps isn't actually a lot however, i don't know a way to make that not stutter and have any decent amount of video quality - my servers are multi-gig
add jellyfin to the list for consideration on this subject
