Player and System Setup 4k vs 1080p TV - symean - 2023-09-14

Hi I just want to check my resolution and refresh rate setup is optimal, plus what I likely have to do differently for my dad's setup.

We will both be running Kodi 20.2 on a Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB or 2GB model) booting LibreElec.

My Setup = recent Sony 4K TV, supports just about every signal format possible on HDMI including 60p and HDR.

Player Settings > Videos
  • Adjust Display Refresh Rate: on start/stop
  • Sync Playback to Display: off

System Settings > Display
  • Resolution: 1920x1080p
  • Refresh Rate: 60.00
  • Set GUI Resolution Limit: 1080
  • Whitelist: all 2160p modes from 23.976 to 60, and all 1080 modes from 23.976 to 30

I played various files and while they were playing I went into the TV's 'set up external input' menu where it shows the current signal format for the active input. Results:
  • file encoded to 480p30 reports as '2k30'
  • file encoded to 720p24 reports as '2k24'
  • file encoded to 1080p25 reports as '2k25'
  • various 4k files at 24, 25 and 60fps all report as '4k24/25/60' accordingly

Question
  1. It seems to be matching the refresh rate in all cases, upscaling anything less than 1080p to 1080p, and playing 4k 'as is'. Is that correct behaviour?
I thought enabling the smaller resolutions would make sense as well, but I tried that and the 480p and 720p videos passed through 'as is' looked horrible with no scaling or smoothing! So obviously Kodi's upscaling is top notch.
My Dad's Setup = Much older Sony 1080p TV, specs indicate it supports 24/30/50/60 at 1080p. No 4k or HDR.

I know I can't give my dad HDR files, Kodi (or LibreElec, not sure who's responsible for that) does not do tone mapping. A 4k TV will likely be a Xmas present but for now this is his setup.

Questions
  1. I have cloned my SD card and just want to change what's needed on the new card for Dad's tv. Would that just be removing all the 4k modes in the whitelist? Anything else?
  2. What about non-HDR 4k files on Dad's tv? Will Kodi downscale to 1080p or are 4k files just not going to play?

Cheers Smile
