TrueHD not available as passthrough - Kowalsky - 2024-03-29

Hello,

I have a SonyTV and Kodi installed in it, build 20.5
TV is properly configured (at least I think it is, because other things are working fine in Dolby Atmos), but maybe I'm missing something for this Kodi issue I'm facing right now.
Sonos Arc soundbar is connected to TV.
So, in Kodi everything works fine, except when playing TrueHD 7.1 material , sound is there but it's Dolby Digital Plus 5.1
In Kodi audio options, passthrough is enabled along with each receiver available, however, for whatever reason TrueHD receiver is not listed and if I understand correctly it should be there, and I guess that is the reason why Kodi can't play it properly.
DDP5.1 Atmos is properly playing as Dolby Atmos.

Really appreciate any help regarding this.

Can your TV passthrough TrueHD?

Well, I'm not sure, the model is KD-55X85K, it says in specifications that it supports Atmos, I guess it's not then and that's it , right?

I guess they're using Dolby Digital Plus Atmos and not Dolby TrueHD Atmos then.

Sony does not allow apps installed on their TV's to send TrueHD audio, however they can usually passthrough TrueHD from a device connnected their HDMI inputs to the eARC HDMI.

Yeah, Sonos soundbar app shows which sound format is playing, so Kodi plays properly DDP5.1 Atmos, in Sonos app that is showing as Dolby Atmos, but when TrueHD audio is played, app says DDP 5.1, so that's confusing a bit, why it wouldn't say Dolby Atmos, but you are right, I made that mistake by saying how other things are working fine in Dolby Atmos, I mean they do, like Playstation5 for example, but for TrueHD actually I have no idea, never tried other media apps, like VLC or Plex, but I doubt that would make any difference regarding this issue. I just never thought that if I get a soundbar and it supports TrueHD, that I would also need a TV that supports TrueHD passthrough, I guess I learned that from this.

Soundbar is connected to eARC HDMI.
I just wish Kodi could offer that option regardless, if it works it works if it doesn't it doesn't, this way I have to wonder.

Kodi can pass TrueHD.  I'm running Kodi on an OSMC Vero V (and before that a Vero 4K+).  That is connected to my Sony Bravia TV and then to a Sony Atmos soundbar via eARC.  I have it set to do passthrough, and when I play something with TrueHD, the soundbar properly reports that as Atmos TrueHD.

Every HDMI port to which you're connected from the Kodi machine all the way to the soundbar has to support the advanced audio, and some TVs (including mine) only support that passthrough on certain ports.  So you might have to do some research on your specific setup in order to get it working (assuming the combination of stuff you have supports it at all).

That's a different route.
Most likely Kodi if installed on a TV can't produce TrueHD, nothing to do with Kodi but that's the way it is.

btw I tried Plex last night and it couldn't produce either, the only difference is that soundbar reported Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, when played with Kodi it reported DDP 5.1
Plex said that the source is TrueHD but it has to transcode it because hardware is not supporting TrueHD.
