Howdy folks,
Looking for some advice on settings. We are experiencing buffering on Live TV (Antenna) to our Onn.TV boxes. I have gen 1, 2 and pro boxes, not the dongles. NextPVR is the backend running on a Ryzen 5 / Windows 11 box.
I've noticed that if I click to record the show then play that while it records it does not buffer. Not sure what the difference would be as I'm not well versed in all this
Using default recording settings in NextPVR. I tried Jellyfin as a server client with NextPVR plugin and found that it will transcode to these Onn.TV boxes in both Live TV and recordings (all .ts files) Maybe that's the issue; the Onn.TV boxes just don't have the horsepower? Anyone use these little guys with success for Live TV over Antenna without transcoding?
I also tried Plex as I have an old lifetime sub. I don't recall if ffmpeg was kicking off on the PC but it doesn't buffer. Plex unfortunately has a few issues with recording that are hard to get around so I don't want to use it.
I can turn on Transcoding in Kodi PVR client settings but it pretty quickly fills up the local storage on the Onn.TV box. Not sure how healthy it is to continually write to the internal storage. For now I've set a 1 hour limit and it is set for 720p. it will eat about 1G of storage in an hour that way.
Appreciate any guidance y'all may have on this.

I have these ONN boxes in the past, and will get the new generation next time I am in the States, and haven't experienced a problem. Kodi direct plays files so h/w should play be fine but I must point out the without the Kodi debug logs I don't consider that you have any problem. I don't consider this a PVR problem or a NextPVR problem, but without logs it is hard to say.
I suggest trying the NextPVR uidroid client to see if it has issues to confirm it is a Kodi specific problem. If uidroid works continue here and include the Kodi logs. If not post on the NextPVR forum with the NextPVR logs.

Yeah, I didn't want to bug you over there as I thought it was the hardware. No other kodi client (all windows) nor the browser here at the house experiences the buffering...
I'll pull the npvr logs and if there is such a file to pull from the Android TV I'll include them too.

It likely isn't going to be a NextPVR or PVR problem so I will probably be sending you back and having the mods move the post but we shall see.

Thanks I will flag this for the moderators to move to the Android forum now, I don't see anything there showing a problem with the backend. On PVR Settings -> Playback try seting Fallback framerate to 59.94 i don't see it helping but it doesn't hurt to make it match your broadcast default.

I had this same issue with the new Onn 4k pro streaming box, and after about a month of troubleshooting and exchanging devices, I gave up. Only figured out the issue after installing a new HP LaserJet printer, cause I was having issues getting the printer set up with HP Smart app. Turns out, in the configuration page of my Xfinity modem/router, I had turned on managed sites, or something like that, and had blocked my old HP printer from Internet access so it wouldn't download and install new firmware without my knowledge, blocking third party ink cartridges. I had 3 or 4 different sites blocked and anything that included the letters HP blocked. When I turned all of this off, I thought maybe this was the issue with my Google TV, and sure enough, no more buffering issues with my live TV, specifically Pluto TV channels. Hopefully this helps someone else.

Thanks for the reply. This scenario doesn't apply in my situation.
I've given up on kodi on my devices. Using Martin's android app for NPVR works great for me.
