There may very well quite possibly be a very simple way to do this and I just don't know, but is there a way to split the screen 4 ways and watch multiple channels? I'm thinking for sports.

"Simply not possibly" means not yet. I did write a demo non-Kodi client for the NextPVR backend that does it https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/emveepee/Testing/images/4x4.jpg so maybe one day (one some platforms) it might be in Kodi.

In order to do this we would need to support PiP in Kodi. The missing piece to doing this is fully separating inputstreams from PVR addons. That’s and bidirectional communication between inputstreams and PVR addons. The latter being the easier part once the first is done.
