Movies freeze for 20 secs every few minutes - B12ian - 2024-10-07
Hello there,
I encounter a strange problem with 3/40 4K movies (Super Mario Bros (2023),Fear and Loathing in LV, and Thelma & Louise). They play for several minutes then freeze for 30 seconds, and repeat all way to the end of the movie
I mainly use the Nvidia Shield (2019 model, Ethernet, gigabit speed)
I tested the movies on the 4K Apple TV (Ethernet) on the Plex and Infuse app, no problem.
Plex app on the Shield, no problem.
VLC on my Mac, no problem.
I tried the discs on my Ub820 bluray player, no problem.
Subtitle on/off doesn’t make a difference.
Kodi 21.1 Omega, am I missing something?
The Kodi app has been deleted and reinstalled twice.
Im a new Kodi user.

The movies are DoVi P7 HVEC(mkv).
I use the Kodi app because of the subtitle luminance is better (but I wish there is a subtitle luminance control like the Panny UB820 player).
(I originally used PM4K add-on)
UPDATE:
I tried the PKC add-on , same problem. So it’s the player problem, another 37 movies play fine.

This option exists. It's under System --> Display and is called "GUI peak luminance in HDR PQ mode".

Are the movies that work P8.1 perchance? Or P7 MEL and not FEL
The shield has issues playing some FEL rips (basically it can't play them at all so they have to be converted on the fly), it simply doesn't have the grunt for some movies to play and be converted at the same time, others it will work fine with.
I'm at work at the moment so can't find the specifics for you, they are somewhere in these threads, but you might want to try using dovi_tools to convert the rip to 8.1 so Kodi doesn't need to do it while also trying to play back the file.

the movies that are working are DoVi P7 HVEC too. I have no idea if they are MEL or FEL. I tried using the dovi_tool to get more information on the medias, but I struggled with the script I think you’re right about the FEL, and working movies are likely MEL. The makeMKV doesn’t give me the information and MEL/FEL options. I had no idea about that layers. I have a lot to learn about them. Do you know if there is a guide for the divi_tool for the noobies?

Quietvoids Dovi_Tool is excellent but not for what you want to do here, what you need is to follow the instruction on this github
