Transform sound format on the fly? - Stefano Fereri - 2024-12-19

Hi,

my Samsung TV can't play the sound of my Stones video when I stream the video from my Windows 11 PC to the TV. So I installed Kodi because I thought that Kodi, as a DLNA server, can also transform the sound. In the audio settings, you can select various settings under "Output Device", but my TV says "Cannot play sound" regardless of the setting I select. I guess I was a bit naive to think that Kodi could transform the sound on the fly, wasn't I?

Thanks for a tip,
Stefano

What formats can your TV accept?
No, Kodi does not transcode audio or video streams.

When I hover over this MKV file, Kodi says it's DTS format. Other MKV video files use Dolby as sound format, which is no problem for my TV.

Ok, so I think the solution will be to transcode the whole video to MP4 or something similar.

Thanks for the clarification
Stefano

You might want to look at the Kodi sharing solutions.  May of them support DLNA serving of media, can do on-the-fly transcoding, pretranscoding of media, run on Windows and even have a Samsung native app for your TV.  I run Mezzmo and it is easily capable of this, as are some of the others.

Thanks,

Jeff

You need to set Number of channels to 2.0, then enable Passthrough, then enable Dolby Digital and Enable Dolby Digital Transcoding, and finally disable all the other formats listed like DTS.

However this will only work if the device running Kodi is connected via HDMI or SPDIF directly to the TV.
