[LIVE] Problem to boot with USB on some computers - dkz - 2009-05-26

I have a strange problem trying to boot the USB stick that i have installed XBMC 9.04 Babylon Live.

I have burnt the CD and tried to install it on a USB-memory on my Dell Inspiron 530s but after booting up with the burnt CD the computer couldn't find my USB-memory only my two fixed harddrives.

So i tried to boot it on my Dell Laptop Latitude D630 and plugged the USB-memory in and xbmc found it directly. I installed XBMC on the USB-memory and everyting went fine. So now i can boot XBMC on my D630 from my USB-memory without any problem (So nice Rolleyes)

I was hoping that the USB-memory now should work in my Dell Inspiron 530s, but when i tried to boot XBMC i get a error message saying. Not boot disk.

Any suggestion on what could be wrong?

your 530 has a "picky" BIOS that is not comfortable with the FAT32 format of XBMC Live.
You have to revert to use the method described here.

Thanks l.capriotti for your reply, but i have already tried the Unetbootin method without any success. When booting up 530s says Boot error. Do you think the result will be any different with Virtualbox? (Haven't tried that yet)

Have now tried both methods suggested in your link above. I can install XBMC on the USB-Stick but no go with booting it up on my Dell 530s. I have even updated the bios from 1.0.16 to 1.0.18 but that didn't help.

Anyone here that have some more suggestions on how to fix this?

Some computers can not boot from USB, is yours one of them? Does your BIOS mention USB as a boot device. Does it support USB booting via ZIP or Hard Disk emulation. If your BIOS does not mention USB/Booting then you are out of luck.

Dell 530s can boot from USB. i have done it 1000 times with other tools. So it's something with XBMC Live... Sad
