- ktd - 2003-12-01 i have set xbmc to choose best resolution and it works fine most of the times. but latly my ripped tv shows stays on widescreen but are not and i have to change mode on my tv. one ex. are scrubs that are 512x384 and that is not a widescreen size, right? - IndieRockSteve - 2003-12-02 thats 4:3, but it sounds like a pal resolution(?) - ktd - 2003-12-02 and pal resolutions is not supported? i thought that it would switch my tv to 4:3 since its a 4:3 resolution... - IndieRockSteve - 2003-12-02 no, they are, but played back on an ntsc tv with native resolution will cause a "letterboxing" of sorts, a small black bar at the top and bottom will appear unless "stretch" or "zoom" are enabled to hide it(and some of the extra info if zoom is selected) - ktd - 2003-12-02 how come some pal 4:3 movies switch my tv to 4:3 mode then? like one iv got that is 640x480. that is a 1.333 ratio just like 512x384 that dont work... - jmarshall - 2003-12-02 assuming you have "choose best resolution" turned on, and you have widescreen enabled in the ms dash, and you are not using 720p or 1080i, then xbmc will be able to switch between 4:3 and 16:9 on the fly. it does so depending on the aspect ratio of the video file. if either of the above things are turned off, then it will not switch on the fly. ignore what indierocksteve has said - if anything, the black bars for that sized movie on a ntsc or pal 4:3 tv will be minimal (a few pixels), and will either appear at the top + bottom or the sides, depending on your calibration settings. if the video is an avi file, then the ratio is generally (99.99% of the time) given by the width/height (in pixels). thus 512x384 should be displayed using 4:3 as you state. if, however, it is an mpeg file, then the aspect ratio is determined within the file itself (mpeg has a flag to specify it) so it may not be 4:3 at all. (eg pal dvds are 720x576 pixels (5:4) yet their aspect ratio is either 4:3 or 16:9). please test this a bit more fully with differing videos and try and get it so that it is repeatable. if there is a bug, we need it to be repeatable in order to find and fix it. cheers, jonathan - ktd - 2003-12-02 well, i have tested it some more and found that most of my files dont switch mode but i have one that does. two examples... i cant see why one does switch but not the other... only difference is in the frames per sec... 1. filename: scrubs.s03e01.my.american.girl.avi filesize: 175,25 mb filelength: 0 h 20 min 30,81 s quality of video: 43240 eff.bits per frame 3:4 video stream: xvid mpeg-4 codec 'xvid' <0x44495658>, 512x384, 24 bit, 29510 frm, 23,9760 frm/s, 1034,120 kbit/s audio stream: mpeg-1 layer 3 (mp3) <0x0055>, 48000 hz, 148,776 kbit/s, stereo dont switch to 4:3!!! 2. filename: sfc cross.avi filesize: 14,06 mb filelength: 0 h 1 min 38,48 s quality of video: 43120 eff.bits per frame 3:4 video stream: xvid mpeg-4 codec 'xvid' <0x44495658>, 512x384, 24 bit, 2462 frm, 25,0000 frm/s, 1075,308 kbit/s audio stream: mpeg-1 layer 3 (mp3) <0x0055>, 48000 hz, 112,000 kbit/s, stereo switch to 4:3!!! - ktd - 2003-12-02 think i just found something... i converted the filename: scrubs.s03e01.my.american.girl.avi filesize: 175,25 mb filelength: 0 h 20 min 30,81 s quality of video: 43240 eff.bits per frame 3:4 video stream: xvid mpeg-4 codec 'xvid' <0x44495658>, 512x384, 24 bit, 29510 frm, 23,9760 frm/s, 1034,120 kbit/s audio stream: mpeg-1 layer 3 (mp3) <0x0055>, 48000 hz, 148,776 kbit/s, stereo to filename: scrubs.s03e01.my.american.girl.avi filesize: 174,81 mb filelength: 0 h 20 min 30,80 s quality of video: 41424 eff.bits per frame 3:4 video stream: xvid mpeg-4 codec 'xvid' <0x44495658>, 512x384, 24 bit, 30770 frm, 25,0000 frm/s, 1033,009 kbit/s audio stream: mpeg-1 layer 3 (mp3) <0x0055>, 48000 hz, 148,776 kbit/s, stereo and then my tv switched to 4:3!!! so, is there a way you could not care about the frames per sec and just go on the size? update! just tried this with a mpg simpsons episode and it hade the same result. with 29,970 fps my tv didnt switch but after i converted it to 25 fps it worked. hope this will help a bit... - jmarshall - 2003-12-03 hi ktd - that helps quite a bit. please help me out a bit more by answering the following: 1. do you have a pal tv? 2. do you have pal 60 enabled in the general settings menu? 3. what resolution are you running xbmc in? (in the general settings menu) 4. when a video does not switch your tv to 4:3 mode, press the y button and please tell me what resolution is specified in the information given. thanks, jonathan - ktd - 2003-12-03 Quote:1. do you have a pal tv?yes Quote:2. do you have pal 60 enabled in the general settings menu?yes Quote:3. what resolution are you running xbmc in? (it'll probably either be pal 4x3 or pal 16x9) when you press the start button whilst playing a movie that does not switch properly (when pal60 is enabled) what resolution does it say it's using in the blue bar at the top (it should say pal60 4:3) thanks, jonathan - ktd - 2003-12-04 Quote:what resolution is stated in the xbmc general settings menu?
