5.1 sound over HDMI from Acer Revo - mcgupta - 2009-11-27

Hi Guys,

I just got my Acer Revo with 2 GB mem and Intel Atom 330 running Vista. I have got it hooked up to my 52" LCD and LCD has an optical output to Samsung Audio reciever.

I have been playing the regular AVIs off of Revo without any issues.

I have a few M2TS movies with LPCM sound that I am trying to play on this setup. I am using PowerDVD 9 and Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 3 on Revo. I have hardware acceleration enabled on both players and am playing the files pretty well (no glitches). The issue is that I am only getting stereo sound with TotalMedia Theatre 3 and no sound with PowerDVD 9. I haven't installed any codecs yet.

Following is the lsit of things that I think could be the cause:

1. Under sound setting for Vista, I only see the option for stereo under HDMI. I have read on different newsgroups that this should be 5.1. I am not sure what I can do to change this. I have installed the latest nForce audio and latest video drivers from Nvidia but that didn't change anything. Would upgrading to Windows 7 be the fix for this ??

2. I have read somewhere that Revo should be connected directly to the audio reciever and then to the TV else 5.1 doesn't work due to DRM issues. Is this correct ?? My Samsung receiver doesn't have a HDMI input but 2 optiocal inputs. Am I s^! t out of luck or is there a way around it ..asuming this is the issue ??

3. Has anyone got a setup similar to this working on Vista or Windows 7 ?? If so, can you please illustrate on your setup/drivers/codecs etc.

Thanks a lot for all your help.
