Port XBMC to TouchPad (webos)
#16
Getting back to the 'porting' question...

Unless WebOS is purchased by a consumer powerhouse like HTC it is likely 1 of 2 things will happen...

1) WebOS will become a commercial focused OS
- set top devices
- specialty devices for commercial needs (medical, inventory/warehousing, automotive, etc)

2) WebOS will die

Either way... IMO it would not be a wise way to spend valuable dev time for XBMC. I'd much rather see those dev resources focused on the larger picture and more important areas for the mass community...

Port to Android - likely Android will jump again when Intel fully supports
Port to ARM - ARM devices will surge soon and provide low-cost, tiny devices for home and commercial use.
I'm not an expert but I play one at work.

Since XBMC stands as an open source project it does not matter as how large the user base is. As long as there are user contributions it will certainly progress.

The user base of the TouchPad is about 1 million and the there is only one acceptable media player available on the WebOS platform. I would say its a big opportunity for XBMC.

As I stated before its much easier to port XBMC to WebOS than Android. All you need to do is to reuse the arm port code with some webos specific headers and library (OpenGLES and SDL related). Video playback may be a bit tricky as the native applications will use fb though X11/xorg can be installed.

I will try to compile it under scratchbox when I got a bit time.

If you are a coder I think your skills could better help the community as a whole then a very small, never to grow, user base of a defunct product.

If you want to do it, I'm not saying you should not. Just realize the user base is small and will never grow... 1 million devices sold - but how many even know about XBMC, or if they do, care. Most of those devices were bought for a few reasons, mainly: surf the web (largest %), ebooks, and techies hoping Android gets ported.

If you get it working, great... just don't expect 1k users to popup (there are only 12k active XBMC users on the forums)... I'd expect more like 100.

I think a basic port running in xorg should be fairly easy to do, but native playback (gpu) etc is another breed.
