Some weird problem with SMB
#1
hi!

since you guys made true my wildest dreams of getting xbmc to stream dvd images, i like to thank you.

however, i've tried to get them to work about 5 hours now, without success. (i have read practically every post on this forum to get help)

getting smb to work: yes, i got it to "work" finally, took about 3 hours thou. there is misinformation on this forum about no password in windows logon: if you do not have password on windows logon, then you do not add just "some" password to config.xml file!

example:
<path>smb://username:[email protected]/folder</path> <---wrong
<path>smb://[email protected]/folder</path> <---right

anyway, my problem is that although smb shows my content of shared folder, it does not play them! so far i tried .mpg and .img files and they do not work. when i press a all it does is blank screen about 1 sec and then it shows again my content of shared folder.

what i've done:
-allowed my firewall to accept everything from ip: 192.168.0.2
-disabled "digitally sign client communication" on win2000
-shared folder and full access to everybody
-my pc does not belong to a domain
-xbmc allows me to ftp

so please help me. gettin smb to work but not to work is annoying... Confused

i've always had that problem...i've been forced to constantly fix what i assume is a windoze xp/2000 weird-ass implimentation of security in sharing/ntfs. after downloading something new, i have to log in as the user i share to the xbmc and my mac g4 cube 'puter on windoze pc and then right mouse click the file to apply full sharing and disable read-only permissions in both the general and sharing tabs of the properties screen for the new file.

only then am i able to access the file remotely and play/modify it on my mac or the xbmc!

damn irritating of winblows...wish i could get rid of the pc entirely, as my mac and the xbox get along swimmingly with the new 3.0.x samba code ported into xbmc this december.

gmackenz, i did not quite follow your answer.

both "general" and "sharings" tabs are anly in folders, not in files. in shared folder i have default setup:
general: read only no, archive no.
sharing->permissions: everyone fullcontrol yes, change yes, read yes.
security: everyone acces to everything
allow inheritable permissions from parent......yes

on shared files i have:
general: read ony no, hidden no.
security: everyone access to everything
allow inheritable permissions from parent......yes

what option is wrong?

p.s. since i do not have a domain, everytime i start windows, i logon as "deka" without password, and user "deka" has administrator rights...

if you have granted everyone access, then try just this:

smb://192.168.0.1/folder/

as your path.

doesn't work. in xbmc it shows only empty folder and win2000 shows that nobody is connected to computer. hard to believe that this is the solution... Sad
