Has anyone successfully got their PI running xbmc over wifi smooth? I've been looking around and can't see any good thread so I thought id put the question out their and ask what setup you use.

not me but i know people have on xbian and openelec.

it depends on:
what your playing 1080p, 720p
protocol you are using , samba/windows sharing is slower than NFS, upnp etc
wifi speed.

i would start by playing the same file locally just to rule out that it can be played normally, then go with a NFS share or Upnp streaming
