OK this is really starting to confuse me now :/

I know that this TV supports 1280x720@50Hz it also supports 1920x1080@60,59,50,24 and 23Hz

I just tested all of these and they all worked under windows, so thats what the TV supports and I should be able to set it to 1920x1080@50Hz nd hopefully start to get to the bottom of this.

However, if I do this

It pretty much gives me none of those settings :/

So I really have no bloody idea what's going on with this thing, and frankly I am just thinking of binning it and using XBMC for movies and vdr for PVR because well, it works I just dont know what else to do.

As I said earlier, it won't with your current xorg.conf. When using nvidia meta modes you only get those modes available on both monitors. NVidia drivers > 302 support xrandr 1.2/1.3 and you configure setup dynamically. Use my xorg.conf and modify output names for your system.
Run xbmc-xrandr to check available modes.
You may not have the modes when connected via VGA.

Ugh, this for me is going to have to go on hold for a while because my pc failed today

Anyway I have it at 50Hz and its still dropping frames (although not as badly) on HD channels the second interlacing is enabled.

Xine vdr (and softhddevice) use Bob for deinterlacing HD channels, I have tried that and autoselect (and others) and none seem to make it better.

Sd seems to be fine.

Anyway I may tinker some more if I feel like doing it on a 4" screen

BBCHD runs smooth with temporal (Hallf) but anything else seems to suffer in dropped frames. (Eg why does BOB work fine in xine / softhddevice but fail in xbmc? is it just a load thing?

Is this the optimal solution? and will your changes eventually be merged into the mainline, so I can stick with the 'official' sources.

Did you enable the vdpau interop options in video settings? Do you see any difference between Bob and Bob - Vdpau? How much VRam has your gfx card?

Enabling both interop (gl was already enabled) made Bob vdpau work pretty well. It still drops the occasional frame but it's unnoticeable.

The graphics card is 512meg btw.

I want to try and eliminate as much potential dropped frames as possible because sometimes it becomes noticeable, so I am guessing the best step is to get a better graphics card.

I have a GT520M in my living room box and can watch 1080i (temporal/spatial) for hours without a single drop. GT610 is similar. It may not be powerful enough for for driving multiple monitors at the same time.

You definitely should start with your xorg.conf which is your main problem. Writing a script to switch monitors is quite simple, e.g.:

xrandr --output CRT-1 --off
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 0x1e9

You can use lirc irexec and call this script on a defined sequence of button presses.

i am really happy with my setup at the moment (new card in the new year) and switching between displays using the remote is a really elegant solution.
