Last time that I had Back Row running, if I clicked exit XBMC on XBMCbuntu it just shuts down the computer, but how do I only log off (like if I want to launch the desktop it anything)

There's a setting you can alter to change the default exit functonality,

Select "System"
then "System" again
under the "Power Saving" heading (to the far right off the screen) select "Shutdown Function" then change it to "Quit" to just close XBMC.
