recently got kodi up and running on my fire stick...how would i go about getting an emulator up and running? would i have to save roms to an external HDD, plug said HDD into the back of my router to connect to my fire stick?

You need to install Kodi (of course), the emulator you want to run, place the ROMs in the filesystem of the Fire Stick and lastly you need a launcher program like Advanced Emulator Launcher.

Due to its size, I think the Fire Stick is not going to be very powerful: maybe it would be OK with 2D games of old consoles but forget about 3D or demanding emulators. Also, I'm not sure if you can install your own software on the Fire Stick... What operating system the Fire Stick has?
