If you want something that works with the default estuary skin without any addons or mods, just assign your movies to custom genres. I organize my movies with Ember Media Manager so I would filter my list by source/directory (ie: Kids Movies) and then set all those movies to ONLY have the genre Kids Movies. Continue assign your other genres to your other movie sources. The key is to wipe out all the normal genres else your custom ones will be lost in the long list. I also have Ember ignore the genre field when scraping movies so I don't have any new genres messing up my system.

The nice thing about genres is that the estuary skin will list them directly on the main movie section, so you can navigate to the genre you want quickly. The deeper you make your interface feature, the less accepting and least used of the feature.
