Hi. I have recently upgraded to a 4K TV and I've ordered a Vero 4K+ media player. Most of my content is 1080p or less but there's a select few things I'd like to have in 4K. I think I'll be keeping the 1080p content even if I had the 4K content so that I can still play the content on my non 4K media player.

My questions are,
1) Say I have a movie that I have in 1080p and in 4K, what is the best way to store that on the NAS in the source directory? (currently I have both movie files in the same folder, the 4K version has an extra on the end of the file name e.g. 'movie.mkv' and 'movie 4K.mkv'
2) How will this be managed when I do a library scan in Kodi?

In a scan, both movies will be scraped into the same title, and both would be listed with identical titles. You could manually edit the scraped title of the 4K videos into something more appropriate. I don't know how many 4K videos/versions you have, but perhaps a bit of typing exercise won't hurt with only a couple of 4K videos.

Having done that successfully, I would do a Video Library Export, so you can have Kodi create .nfo files which include the alternate titles. It'll come in handy for backup/restore/rescraping purposes.

Alternatively, you could use smart playlists or even a separate profile for 4K videos, but that would seem a bit overkill for ... how many 4K videos?

 Ah okay, I've not had to create .nfo files before but I've read about them. Are they files that I manually create alongside each of the movie files? Right now I have about less than 8 movies that are 4K. However, this may increase once I appreciate the better quality 4K movies so I can see this increasing a lot more in future. I'm happy to use the nfo file solution as the separate profile for 4K seems a bit of a faff.

I suppose another option is that I create separate video sources for movies that I have in multiple resolutions (1080p and 4K). And then I add the appropriate source depending on the capability of the player. I'll need a 3rd source for movies that I don't have in 4K so that will be a common source to both media players.

Some skins will provide media "cases" in poster views that are color-keyed or have icons derived from the filenames.  So if you had "uhd" in the filename the skin would display an appropriate case around the poster.  The concept also can be extended to "flag bars" that skins provide showing various icons related to the media item in focus in a view.

I use a Smart Playlist named 4K Movies and just set a rule to search for 2160p in the Filename.
